“Mixed reactions regarding the food, expensive”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2012

Service at this restaurant was fabulous; waitress even bought over 3 bottles of wine for me to try as to make my selection.
Food; mixed reactions.
Mine; grilled salmon, wonderful.
Daughter;smoked cheddar gnocchi, excellent presentation, average taste.
Son; morrocan eggplant dish, states best meal ever.
Husband; 'cassoulet' apparently cuts of mutton, duck and pork belly, meat was tender but tasteless and served on bed of bland chickpeas.
Desserts, disappointing compared to menu description, but beautifully presented.
Fresh NZ oysters were magnificent but expensive at $52 per dozen (robbery when I can by the same ones for half the price in Australia).
All in all, v. expensive meal which was more like work of art than food, and minimalist art at that. Perfect size for me, however, husband thinks way too small

“Just average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2012

I had a dinner in March at the 50 Bistro. In general it was ok. Had oysters on the shell, salmon belly tempura and prime aged beef fillet. The food was well prepared, but had no taste of its own. The beef, was as asked for, medium rare, the best medium rare I have had in New Zealand, exactly how it should be. But the meat in itself was tender but totally without any taste of its own. A better selected meat would have been a great main course when it was so nice prepared.

“Excellent cuisine.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2012

I can't believe other reviews did not like the food at this restaurant. It is fabulous by all standards. Even the kids menu is great. The entrees are cuisine d'auteur. The grill is probably on of the best I have ever tasted. This is an award winning cuisine for the past ten years . The grilled lamb is unique, don't miss a chance to go to this restaurant.

“great breakfast”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 18, 2011

Ate here for breakfast 2 days in a row as we were staying at the george- very, very tasty and great service. We had both the continental breakfast plus one hot item each morning. The full breakfast with eggs any style, sausage, hash browns, portobello was outstanding. We weren't familiar with griddle cakes (were thinking may be like pancakes, but were more like a cross between pancake, corn muffin & cake and quite dry), but ordered them anyways. The omelet was ok, but not the best I've had by any means. Would only highly recommend the full breakfast with eggs any style. Service was decent.
