“First Class”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2008

Three of us stayed in a first class two bedroom unit. The owners were especially friendly and helped us not only with recommendations to local attractions (including an excellent restaurant) but also with general tips for the area. When I return to Christchurch I will automatically try to book at the Salerno.

I was traveling with my cousins, who are free spirited folk ,so we never booked ahead. We just lucked out when we found the Salerno through the Info Office in Christchurch. It has incredible rooms and the affable and expert proprietors, Pauline and Brendan, made us feel right at home.

Our original plan was to travel back through North Island and leave from Auckland; that didn't happen. When it became clear that we wanted to stay longer in the South Island and use Christchurch as a base for our last 2 days, we booked the Salerno for the remainder of our trip. It was an easy decision and not regretted!

I highly recommend the Salerno and I would return in a heartbeat... if only New Zealand were only a tad closer to Texas!!!

Wonderful people and country!

We came for a night with no expectations. The friendly owners put us into the honeymoon suite with a smile...
We have stayed at a few motels in our current trip to NZ but this was the best.
The room was immaculate - we thought we were the first to stay - but we learned later that it had been open for the last 12 months!
Double glazing worked well, no noise and it was cosy despite the cool evening. The spa bath is huge. The furniture is modern, chic, comfortable.
Our hosts were very helpul with local information.
We would have no hesitation in coming here again on our next trip.

I stayed for four nights with a friend in a one bedroom apartment, The motel was our last option as a previous booking fell though at the last minute and almost everything else was booked out (a Bon Jovi concert was on at the time) - but it was a blessing in disguise.
The room included a comfortable pull-out couch/bed in the lounge, as well as a king bed in the bedroom. Our lounge/kitchen area was well sized for 2 people, but the 2 bedroom suite next to our apartment was really huge!
Our apartment had a huge spa bath that was heavenly at the end of a day sightseeing, as were the 2 flatscreen tvs, the toastie press and the thick carpets. There was no noise from the rooms either side of us, but being almost on the intersection of two main roads the drone of traffic and the odd police siren could be heard in the lounge at night - though my friend in the bedroom didn't hear it. There were motels closer to the square, but the walk was only about 15 mins. It was 5 min walk from a range of cheap cafes, restaurants and bars.
If you are planning on booking a room at Salerno I would recommend the one bedroom over the studio, the little extra money is worth it.

We stayed here for 3 nights in January 2008.

The room was more of a 5 star apartment.

A huge king size bed (probably the most comfortable bed I've slept in!). A big spa bath. Fully (and I mean fully!) equipped kitchen with stainelss steel applicances, washer/dryer. A wall mounted LCD TV was great too. I have to mention the carpet which must have been 3 inches thick. If the bed wasn't so comfy I'd have probably slept on the floor.

All in all one of the bvest places I've stayed and very reasonable cost at only $165 NZ per night.

Would highly recommend.

The Salerno Motel has to be the best place we have ever stayed at. It had just opened (we stayed there in April), and all the fixtures, fittings and furnishings were top quality. There was a choice of room combinations - we chose one with a spa bath, and a combined room/kitchenette. Because the cost was so economical (in relation to the excellent quality), I was able to afford to pay for my brother and his wife to stay there at the same time. They had the 'Honeymoon Room', but the only difference that we could see, was that this room had a washing-machine!
The owners were friendly and helpful, and this motel is a credit to them. We will be staying there again when we return to New Zealand. If you want quality, this motel is the place for you.

Stayed here the night before flying to Fiji, so only the one night. So, not a great deal to say. The Hotel is very new so everything is in excellent condition.

Location: 5 minutes walk into Christchurch Cathedral Square, very handy and you can't get lost. Plenty of eating places on the way and souvenir shops too.

Room: Excellent quality, however as we found out, the smoke alarm is extremely sensitive and heat from the shower in the bathroom will set it off. This will then set off all the ones in the other rooms - not what you need at 3am in the morning.

Food: N/A

Service: Extremely helpful staff and even stayed happy when I set off the smoke alarm mentioned above.

A very comfortable stay and recommended.
