I'd advise visitors to Christchurch not to linger in the devastated city centre, but to drive out to the hill suburbs, which offer magnificent views of the mountains and the Pacific coast. Try Mount Pleasant Road, Moncks Spur Road or the Summit Road; the scenery is breathtaking. From the highest points, you can see right up the coast to Kaikoura.
Another favourite trip is from Christchurch to Diamond Harbour, via Governors Bay. On a fine day, you cannot imagine a more beautiful drive anywhere; there are plenty of places to stop and have a picnic.
