“Emergency stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 17, 2013 via mobile

We called up based in a recommendation from one of the other hotels as it was a busy weekend in Christchurch. We were lucky to get the last room right on the street. Despite it being a non cruising zone we had cars go up and down the street all night, I had about fifteen minutes sleep.
What i didn't appreciate was the owner or manager trying to convince us that we needed to book in for the next night as well, or that we would not have anywhere to stay. In the end we found somewhere which was more suitable to a good nights sleep.

We spent 2 most enjoyable nights at the Merivale Manor. For comfort, style and service it is 5-star. New owners and 'hosts', Wayne and Karen, while busy adding improvements in style and decor, do everything they can to ensure that guests have a great stay. You have the feeling of staying with friends. Everything here is immaculate and tasteful. We especially enjoyed the the vintage and beautifully restored 'manor house' which is central to the comfortable looking modern units. The large units in the manor house are vintage and luxurious. Merivale Manor is located about 10 minutes by bus from the city center. The bus comes and goes from in front of the motel and is very convenient. Includes continental breakfast in your room. Unfortunately when we arrived, Merivale Manor had overridden our booking with another booking and had us as arriving the next day even though we had confirmed our booking by phone three days earlier. Management were very apologetic but we were put accross the road at Merivale Apartments into a 3 bed unit - this place is really noisy with alot of traffic noise!
When we did get into Merivale Manor, we were happy with the family unit, it is nice and quiet and has good kicthen facilities.
The family unit: one open plan room with a queen bed and a seperate single bed. We had plenty of room for the cot also.
Although it is clean, the condition of the place is average, it could do with a good sugar soaping up high in the bathroom and there are gaps under the main door to outside and in the bathroom that all sorts of creatures could get in. A bit of a paint and freshen up would do this place wonders before it becomes tired.
Location is brilliant, a short walk to Merivale mall which has bars and eateries, supermarket and some clothes shops..

Very personable welcoming! The rooms are very comfortable size. Heat pumps for the room and electric blankets on the bed. Spa bath in our room. Very clean. Good rate. Great location. Numerous great restaurants within a 3 block walk. Internet access is included in the rate.. the fastest connection in 3 weeks in Australia and New Zealand. Can't think of a single thing negative about this place. Would come back in a heartbeat.

This lovely old house has a certain charm about it. We spent a total of six nights here and felt very much at home. Our 1 bedroom upstairs apartment was small but cosy and clean. The extra touches were much appreciated, such as breakfast supplies and a kitchen tidy bin with a recycle compartment. Our trip was to visit ailing relatives so it was a comfort to have such a good place to stay. We didn’t notice much traffic noise, although there was quite a bit coming from one of the houses next to the manor where children were bouncing on the trampoline. The mattress was a bit hard and could feel the springs, but this was minor. The staff and owners were friendly and obliging at all times and I was thrilled to be able to get some washing done and dried on the clothesline before returning home. Thank you to Mike and Samantha for your hospitality, we will definitely recommend Merivale Manor for anyone travelling to Christchurch.

Room Tip: In the Manor upstairs away from the trampoline of the house next door.

24 of us from Auckland recently had a weekend in Christchurch at the Merivale Manor Motel. It's the second time we've stayed and had a great weekend. The relieving management went out of their way to ensure we had a good stay...and that we did. They showed us the meaning of true hospitality and I would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: We stayed in the two bedroom apartment on the ground of the old manor. Both rooms were large plus t...

Absolutely no downside to this accommodation, perfect in every way. Check in was friendly and quick. We had a room in the manor and it was beautiful. Comfy sitting area, breakfast provisions, excellent bathroom (good shower) and the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in (apart from my own). Add to that a large selection of really excellent restaurants and pubs within a few minutes walk and we could not find a fault and would definately stay here again.

Room Tip: Choose to stay in the manor, extra special
