Utterly brilliant. This is a superb construction and the cathedral is absolutely excellent. The volunteers are all so informative and helpful.

“A waste of money?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

This temporary cathedral has won a high ranking international award for its innovative design especially the unconventional use of cardboard. Inside is light and airy and not particularly "churchy". Cost to build was almost $6M and while there is no charge to enter, there is a notice asking for donations as it costs about $600 per day to run. I read somewhere that except for major national or civic commemorations, attendances at the old cathedral before the earthquakes ruined it were as low as 70 for a Sunday service, and of those about one third were visitors. . This temporary transitional cathedral is not large enough to hold those major events, and has an estimated life span of 40 years.
In the circumstances I have to question whether building the cardboard cathedral was a waste of money, and whether an existing church which survived the earthquakes intact such as St Michaels near the public hospital could have served as the temporary cathedral, while the future of the ruined one (which is causing bitter debate) is settled

“Moving visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2014

It was quite moving to visit this cathedral, which is a beacon of light, as well as hope, in a city which is still recovering from the catastrophe of February 2011. The evensong is at 5:30pm

Go see it. Interesting. I don't want to be the spoiler though, so find out what you think on your own.
