Owner description: Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, New Zealand is a must see for its stunning views, beautiful bays and quirky campgrounds. Little River is the gateway to the peninsula. The township has a hotel/pub, 2 cafes, a petrol station, art gallery, craft store and small museum. There are B&Bs, plus the Little River Campground in Okuti Valley Road. They have affordable campervan parks with power, cabins and tentsites set beside a river. The southern bays have some of the best surf, if you know the secret spots as well as good, safe swimming beaches, walking tracks and the Little River Rail Trail. It is a a place that is often over looked as tourists head to Akaroa. If you want to experience more than the usual, to get off the beaten track and really explore, ask at the craft station, which has an info centre.

“Stop at Little River”

Akaroa is very touristy but still worth a visit. However, to get there you pass through Little River where this a very good cafe / art gallery.

Akaroa is one of Canterbury's greatest little treasures! Only a bit over an hour away from Christchurch and views are spectacular.

“A beautiful place that you will want to visit again and again!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

Don't miss doing the Summit Road when you hit the hilltop where incidentally there is a great pub and a view worth millions. On the Summit Road you get great views of the Eastern Bays - pop down to some of the Bays especially Okains Bay where there is an amazing museum and eventually the Summit Road arrives in Akaroa which is a cute wee French inspired village. Travel home along the waterfront and round the other bays and make sure you stop at the Hilltop Pub on the way home for a pizza and a chocolate rum banana dessert which is also baked in the pizza oven - yum!!!!

“Awesome views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2012

This is a beautiful part of South Island - we gasped at virtually every corner we went round as there was a stunning view awaiting us - from rolling green hills, to snow capped mountains, glistening lakes, harbours & bays, crazy jaw dropping scenic roads which require nerves of steel - daffodils, cherry trees in full bloom, lambs cavorting on the hillsides, ducklings, swans nesting, deserted beaches, world class restaurants where you'd least expect to find them, qulaity craft shops selling locally made products, friendly locals, history, & much much more. A truly special place & a must to visit.
