“Great Hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 2, 2013 via mobile

Warm and friendly atmosphere, clean and tidy rooms and bathrooms. It feels more like a home than a Hostel. Owner run and operated, you get a sense that they not only take pride in their hostel, that they genuinely want to make you feel as welcome as possible. Great amenities such as the Hot Tub and Sauna, and not too far from the CBD, makes this for me a must stay if you go to Christchurch.

Great place to stay. All villas are very tidy, beds are big and comfy, kitchen is well equipped and the nights I stayed were quiet. Everybody seemed very respectful and friendly. I definately recommend the Old Countryhouse.

Great place to stay. I would recommend it to anyone, including families with children. Comfy beds, lovely atmosphere, very clean kitchen and bathrooms, spa pool, and clear boundaries around quiet times.
Exceptionally friendly, helpful and clean

I've read some bad reviews of this place, luckily after my stay as i would probably steer away from it. My experience was complete opposite. There are rules there and management is on the ball, and very helpful and caring. Rooms are cleaned daily as well as bathrooms and toilets. Internet signal is kinda bad and limited, this is the only downside of this place. Dorms are not that expensive and beds are very comfy and I'm tall person who always struggle with hotels bedding. Another thing though is a lack of power sockets, there were only 2 in 5 bed dorm, not enough! But on the other hand, when I've asked for an extension lead, receptionist searched as long as she found one and brought it to my room, that is what I call caring for your guests needs. Kitchen is well equipped and large enough for few people cooking at the same time. I'm on the world tour and seen a lot of places, and this is one of better ones. If you used to hostels way of accommodation you won't be disappointed.

The Old Countryhouse was a great hostel and a little home from home. There are several separate buildings, with each one set up with bedrooms, dorm rooms, a cosy lounge, big, well equipped kitchen and proper bathrooms. We chose TOC as it said it wasn't a party hostel; which it also states on signs in the kitchen. This was well founded, as there was no noise in the evening and we slept very well the two nights we stayed there. TOC is more the sort of place you curl up on the sofa with a DVD or sit in the kitchen and have a good conversation with the other guests. There's also a hot tub and sauna outside, but we didn't get round to using these. In the grounds there are lovely touches such as watering cans and old mini wheelbarrows with bedding plants.

We found the staff very helpful, giving us maps and advising us on places to go and how to get there. There are grocery shops, a Subway and a DVD rental store a minute's walk away on the corner, and buses into the city centre run from just opposite the hostel.

was disappointed in the lack of maintenance of guests - this place definitely allows the animals to run wild and not recommended for those looking for a good night sleep.
I was woken in the wee hours of the night by guests returning - not just the opening of the doors but the hooligan behaviour that was allowed by the reception who accompanied the terror.
The heating is over cooking the lambs that cannot rest well in bunks that are uncomfortable.
Bathrooms were not of the cleanest either
Definitely one coop to steer clear of

I just stay 2 nights in this hostel but I found the place peaceful and cozy.
The room are comfortables, they just need more electrical plugs (only 2 plugs for 4 peoples).
The Old Countryhouse team was welcoming and help me to organize a taxi to Christchurch's airport. They also gave me a lot of informations about Christchurch.
Finally, everything was great : staffs, rooms and peoples.
