Owner description: The TranzAlpine scenic train journey travels between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. From the comfort of world class carriages you'll see the fields of the Canterbury Plains and farmland, followed by the spectacular gorges and river valleys of the Waimakariri River. Your train then climbs into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech rainforest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature state award winning carriages including panoramic side and sky-view windows, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine operates a daily return service throughout the year.

“Awesome rail trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

A must do if you are in CHRISTCHURCH, will require a full day. A fantastic rail trip thru the alpine mountains, great way to enjoy a lunch on board with fantastic surroundings, the train also has a open carriage where you can take photo's.

“Magnificent to average scenery”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2013

We began our trip at Christchurch going to Greymouth. The first half of the trip had the most magnificent snowny mountains. The second half after going through the 15 minute tunnel showed average looking mountain ranges. The audio guide was informative, learned history of the area, peaks/valleys/gorges names along the way. The observation car was a plus for the trip, everyone worked together in pictures taking for others and terrain. The cafe car's food actually was better than average. The staff was friendly, helpful, and circulated numerous times picking out used items. We arrived in Greymouth about 1 1/2 to 2 hours late due to what they said were weather conditions. Apparently being late in not unusual, we were told that any transfers know to wait for late train arrivals. Somewhat disappointing when you need to pick up a car and drive another three hours through unfamiliar winding mountain roads.

“Beautiful even in winter!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

Having had mixed reviews from people before we left, we hoped the trip would be more positive than negative and it was!! From helpful and informative staff to gorgeous scenery, even in the rain this was a really enjoyable trip. We left the train at Greymouth but even if you just go there, have lunch, then jump back onto return to Christchurch, we recommend it!

Stunning scenery all year round - particularly winter with snow through the pass. do it as a day trip or stay overnight.

“Great Scenic Trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

A great way to sit back in large comfy seats along with the headphone commentary to watch the stunning scenery pass by the huge viewing windows
A walk to the open viewing carriage is most breath taking. (remember camera)
Was a little disappointed with the dining carriage this does not seem like it has been updated being very noisy and I found the food was quite expensive plus they ran out of sandwiches etc and had to buy pies in Greymouth to sell on the return trip. Tip. go to the Bakery by the train station before boarding, better selection and better prices.
I would suggest you don't book ahead too soon as I ended up paying about $50 more for my return ticket than if I had only booked a couple of weeks ahead on their special winter deal.(they do have a summer special also)
I think the scenery on this trip makes this a bucket list must.
