“Well worth a visit!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2013

We loved Orana Park - it might not be as fancy as some big city zoos, but the animals all seem well cared for and content. There are plenty of opportunity to hand feed some of the animals (giraffes, rhinos, farmyard animals etc) or to watch others such as tigers, lions, otters being fed - check their website for times before you go. Lots of keepers and volunteers around to ask questions of, and a great little free shuttle goes around the park every half hour.

Only downside is probably the food (expensive and very ordinary) but there are many areas around to sit and eat your own food, including by the playground with a huge flying fox.

It's a big place, so set aside aside a good few hours.

“very enjoyable! not just a zoo”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 28, 2013

I had so much fun at this wildlife park. We went inside the lion enclosure and i had a lion drool on me, then we were able to feed the giraffes! the animals seemed reasonably happy with more than average space for a zoo, although it was a very hot day for NZ. Great giftshop and very pleasant staff who clearly love doing what they do. Kids will go berserk! HIGHLIGHT: seeing a kiwi

“Sad, Empty & Run Down”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

I have been to the park on several occasions since it opened and always enjoyed, especially with the grandchildren. This time, a hot summer day, it just looked tired and unkempt. There seemed to be few animals in the enclosures, poor signage and rough grounds. It looks as though the few paid staff and many volunteers are operating on a shoestring budget. If there are problems post earthquake then they should say so and adjust their admission prices to reflect the state of the park

“Absolute must in ChCh”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2013

My girlfriend and I went with a few CHCH locals to the wildlife park. After a bit of deliberating of weather or not to pay the extra to go into the lion enclosure, we decided to go for it. I can honestly tell you it was one of the more thrilling experiences I have ever had, and worth every penny.

And that wasn't even the highlight of the park! Went into the lion enclosure...(believe me, these lions aren't your average, meandering cats but big, wild, loud animals that crawl jump and roar on the cage). We then were invited to feed the giraffes, which was amazing. After that went to watch rhinos, feed trout, cheetahs, and wild dogs.

Admittedly on the day we chose to visit there were very few people there, so the staff would have had more time to give us each individual attention, but I actually felt welcome, and the staff seemed to actually care, which was different to the many other zoos and wildlife parks we visited in the next few months.

Overall. Killer park, keep up the good work.

“Great place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2013

This is a awesome place we took our twin 18mths old granddaughters they loved it ! Lots of animals and feeding time is great. I would take our own food next time as the food in the cafe was not that good and very expensive.
