We were fortunate in the timing of our trip as the gondola had reopened about a month before we were in Christchurch; after more than two years being closed after the Christchurch earthquakes. As part of the relaunch up to three children could travel free which was good news for us as we only had to pay for three of us. The ride up the hill is good – not a terrifying ride like the Langkawi cable car! The view at the top is superb – a great view of Lyttleton and the port on one side, and the city, Canterbury plains and the Southern Alps on the other. Going up there is a lot of evidence of rockfalls on the access road – I wasn’t sure if this was from the earthquakes or from preventative work. There are walks around the top to enjoy the view, and an audio visual show about the history of Canterbury. It is poignant to compare the picture boards showing the views before the earthquakes with the current view – it gives some idea of what has been lost.
