“A great little find”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2013

Our first visit to this restaurant was a Friday night in February 2013. After previous disappointing Thai meals in Christchurch we chose this one because although there were not many reviews, they were all good. We were not disappointed.

May's Thai is only a small restaurant, about 10 tables, but it was clear there was a bustling takeaway service as well. We were seated quickly and given our menus and we were very impressed with the choices available. We shared a starter of 'bread and mince', which comprised eight little pieces of bread topped with a spicy mince mixture, served with a little salad and a dipping sauce. Very tasty.

We then shared our two main meals, mixed meats in a chilli and whiskey sauce and roast duck red curry. The mains included rice and were served within a reasonable time after we had finished our starter. The red curry was absolutely delicious, just the right amount of spice and definitely recommended. The other main meal was also enjoyable but the red curry beat it hands down in my opinion!

The restaurant is fully byo so we took our own beer and were not charged any corkage, although it does say $2 each on the menu.

The total bill was $51 and we thought this represented great value. In fact so much so, that we are returning again this weekend with four of our friends.

There is parking right outside the door and I think this could be one of the absolute Thai treasures in Christchurch.

“Best Thai Around”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

We visited this very steamy restaurant on a very warm 30 c night and were thoroughly delighted with the fare we received. Our party of four had tried to dine a week ago and couldn't get a booking and we now see why! We had spicy red duck curry which was gorgeous and the right amount of heat for our mixed palates. We had the Lamb Musssam curry, drunken Fried Rice noodle with pork and the Yum salad with beef. All dishes were generous and full of flavour. The service was friendly and helpful supplying extra chilli sauces for those with a stronger constitution. Corkage is $2 per person and the meals came with ample rice to soak up the flavours. The temperatures inside was high but the lovely waitress opened the door to let in some much needed air during the meal. All thought it was the best Thai we had had for some time. The bill came to a very palatable $84 for four and we will be back very soon to try other dishes.

“Clean and crisp”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

Lovely food with clean crisp flavours- I had the ginger curry chicken (medium heat which was hot enough). Good surroundings (it was hard to believe we were sitting on Wairakei Road) and the aromas were tantalising without leaving lingering after effects on clothes, Friendly, warm staff and prompt service. Bookings ESSENTIAL- there were many disappointed people turned away while we were there. Priced well.
