My adult daughter and I just returned from our self drive vacation throughout New Zealand. I can truly say that this was the worst hotel that we ever stayed at while in New Zealand and to pay over $150 USD a night is a joke!
The hotel appears to have a "new" and "old" section which you can tell as soon as you drive in. There is a hotel called Camelot right next door and the one wing of the Pavillons hotel now has this wing included in their property-quess where we stayed?(We later got the scoop out of the front desk personnel that both properties were owned by the same person but the owner decided when splitting them up he would keep one property from the Camelot for the Pavilions property.
The reception area was helpful and appeared modern and updated along with the restaurant. However, as soon as we were given our key and told where our room was I could see that this would be a LONG three day stay!
The wing we were in (700 section) looks like a relic from the 60's with two stories in rickety outside wooden stairs connecting them.We opened the door to find a room that might have had a newer TV and a paint job but a very old soul inside.
This was the ONLY hotel we came across in New Zealand that didn't have a coffee pot/french press, stove, toaster and utensils/plates.etc. It had a older fridge that was leaking water inside of it along with a water kettle, cups and two spoons.Very disappointing!
The bathroom had a 6 inch wide sink by the toilet which I believe was left over from a previous decorating) ? The regular sink had two faucets so you would either freeze your hands or burn them trying to get warm water. The tub was very old and had a small shower head that left alot to be desired for a shower.Decor was a lovely dirty looking beige and should have been included in a redo after seeing pics on this site showing what the other rooms' looked like. The beds were soggy and the sheets were old and very mellow yellow looking along with pillows that should have been thrown out years ago.
I am an international flight attendant and fly all over the world. This hotel didn't pass any security concerns that my airline would have for our layovers. There is only one push in lock on the door-no chain lock as a backup. The two windows in the front of the unit which are right by your bed have no bars, screens or anything to protect someone from climbing through while you are sleeping as they open onto a general walkway. One had to have the windows open as it was extremely hot in the unit and there was no other ventilation available other than the bathroom window.
The only thing that is going for this hotel is that they offer free Wifi and you can order movies(think oldies but goodies) from the from desk.
Christchurch is a wonderful city and although it is still cleaning up after the earthquake I think that you can best spend your money elsewhere to help the economy OR perhaps get a room in the main area?
Avoid! Or don't accept any rooms in the old wing that they got from the Camelot hotel.

I am only sorry that you did not let us know as soon as you entered your room that you would of preferred another room type or to stay elsewhere in the hotel. You are right our rooms do vary. Many of our corporate customers do have a preference for the wing you stayed in as the rooms are quite, concrete blocked so warm in winter - cooler in summer and correct in the statement that they have been refurbished with new televisions.
I am also glad you enjoyed our free wifi and inhouse movies also, as well as our friendly reception team.
