Upon checking into our room (almost midnight after a long day's drive), we discovered that it was not what we had reserved. We had asked for a room with one large bed and two singles, and instead the room had two large beds. When we went back to the lobby, the guy actually said "no no, the one big bed splits in two". Just in case, we looked again--and no such thing! Upon a second trip, the "busy" worker had to finally take the two seconds to look at his computer hotel layout, which revealed that--aha--we were right. (sigh)
The facilities were just passable; the beds were musty, the sink in the laundry room was jammed and filled with fetid water, and the noise from the nearby bar was noticeable even on the 5th floor where we were.
But the staff's laziness had yet to peak--
We were proceeding on a road trip from there to Queenstown, flying back to Christchurch en route to our home in the USA, and the hotel agreed to hold onto some of our excess baggage for those few days. We gave them a credit card number to book our two bags on a cab to the airport when we were returning (our flight to Australia was leaving from Christchurch). Unfortunately, our flight returning to Christchurch was cancelled, so we weren't there to pick up the bags and the cabbie returned them to the hotel. However, when we finally did arrive back in Christchurch, and went to the hotel (again, after driving an eternity) that evening, they told us that the bags must be at the airport, "because there's nothing in the area where we keep that stuff right now". This, again, without a second of movement from the seat that the employee was on, to physically go check anywhere. Upon our arrival at the airport for our 4am flight, we discovered that OOPS, the luggage WAS still at the hotel, a fact which was ultimately confirmed via phone once we were already in Australia, awaiting our flight back to the States. Needless to say, the hotel has never heard of "the customer is always right"--they proceeded to whine that "we weren't there when the cabbie went" (as though that had anything to do with their misinforming us to our face!), and of course they were unwilling to ship the bags to us without charge (in the neighborhood of $600 they said). Avoid this hotel at ALL costs--with staff that lethally incompetent, who knows what mishap may befall you!
