Owner description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

“Constantly changing scene”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 30, 2013

Likes: scenery that is constantly changing, including a good look at the salt works.
Comfortable with snacks and coffee available.
Arriving in Picton at 1pmish, still plenty of time to do something.

Dislikes: an early start, not my thing!

“Fantastic Views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 29, 2013

This is a must if you have the time. Travel from Christchurch up Picton and stay the night. Enjoy a nice meal in the quaint village then take the trip back down the next day. The views along the coast are absolutely spectacular. This is perhaps one of my favourite excursions anywhere in the world!

“A high point of our NZ holiday, and there were many others”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 12, 2013

We had a delightful time during our three-week NZ holiday, so it would be hard to pick just one or two high points.
However, if you should be visiting South Island, this train trip is not to be missed... perhaps one of the best in the world.
We took it from Christchurch to Picton on a beautiful sunny autumn morning. There was so much to see, and such variety: shoreline, dolphins and whales, seabirds, mountains, vineyards, and on and on.
The staff gave a helpful running commentary, and called our attention to the various wildlife -- informative and delivered with a great sense of humour (and much pride!).
There is an open-air observation carriage at the back of the train -- standing only, no seats... much better to watch from here than from behind the glass in a comfy seat up front!

“Scenic trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2013

This has to be one of the most beautiful train trips in the world. Snaking your way from Picton to Christchurch via the coast is in part breathtaking. For a good portion of the trip there is nothing between you (train) and the sandy beach! Checkin at the station from the ferry was seamless and efficient and boarding was equally pleasing. The commentary included in the trip (via headphones) was very informative and interesting and afforded the opportunity to understand history of some places along the way. Disembarking was also easy with luggage being available very efficiently. The open air carriage on the train was perfect for photos albeit being absolutely freezing from the icy wind! Well recommended.

“This is THE way to go from Christchurch to Picton!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

We arrived in Christchurch and did not want to immediately drive on the left hand side of the road until we had our NZ legs under us. We took the train the next morning amongst the gorgeous mountain ranges and coastal scenery in a very relaxing train ride. Go to the open air car for many great photo ops. We loved this train ride as our first glimpse of NZ, fantastic!! Highly recommend!
