I was visiting Christchurch for meetings and decided to take my son and two of his female flatmates out for dinner. Wanting to steer them away from the usual uni student 'alehouses' I asked my son to choose somewhere they wouldn't normally go. They chose St Germain. While I am familiar with French restaurants none of them had ever been to one. What a brilliant choice this was! We arrived and were offered seats in the lounge off the bar area. Us ladies had a mimosa cocktail (son being the sober driver!) and a lovely platter of bread and olive tapenade was given to us to enjoy - this was complimentary. We then moved through to our table. I thought the young'uns might be put off by the very French background music but they said they liked it - it made the place special. From the entrees including escargot, which they all had a taste of, and the quail which my son thought was delicious, to the mains of duck, fish and tasty vegetarian options, and finally the desserts - creme brulee to die for! The girls and I enjoyed a lovely Chenin Blanc which the waiter helped us choose from the extensive wine list. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at St Germain who made this a magnificent first experience of French fine dining for three young people and one old hand! I highly recommend this restaurant and I can't wait to go back there the next time I am in Christchurch.
