Do not know what has happened in 2012 but our experience of the recent 4 night stay in Dec 2012 did not reflect the pre 2012 reviews, of quality cooked breakfast & very friendly hospitality, with both of these important elements of a good B& B being totally non existent.
With the owner (Chet) back home in Malaysia, his business partner (Steve) totally disinterested in any aspect of the B&B and all the work was left to a young Chinese guy ( Jason) who worked frantically to ensure the rooms were clean and ready for guests arrival.
Beware the breakfast comprises of a choice of 2 cereals, making your own hot drinks & toast along with 8 other guests all trying to squeeze into a space 1M sq and sit around a table for 4 persons. No sign of any butter, cheese, meats or pastries that normally constitute a continental breakfast.
The bed linen was so thin holes appeared, pillows like solid hardboard and towels that smelt damp ( due to being folded when still damp) do not set the scene of a B& B that was entered into the Best B&B in 2010.
Whilst the electronic keys proved to be very convenient it is the fist time we have checked into, and out of, a B&B with out our host being present
We were looking forward to Designer Cottage being the best B& B we stayed in during our 2 week tour of New Zealand. Instead it ended up being the worst we have ever experienced. During a subsequently discussion with Chet, via a phone call, Chet refused to acknowledge the poor service we had received and the response we received, to our concerns, was if you are not happy then go and find another B&B. You can imagine how this made us feel! ( certainly not the friendly hospitality expected) and can now only assume what we experienced is now the norm for guests staying @ Designer Cottage with accommodation availability being in very short supply due to the major hotels being destroyed in the Earthquake and the subsequent high number of building contractors now seeking accommodation.
On that basis Designer Cottage has been removed from our list of recommended B&Bs. A great shame, years of hard work establishing what must have been an excellent B&B appears to have been totally destroyed in such a short space of time.
