I stayed at Walnut Block last weekend for a couple nights on a business trip down to Blenheim - Clyde and Helen could not have been more welcoming.

5 star accommodation at about 3.5 star pricing...

If you're looking for a quiet spot out in the vineyards, look no further - excellent value for money.

We stayed three nights at the Walnut Block Cottages. There are two identidcal cottages situated side by side. But because of the way they are angled, you cannot see the other cottage. We used this as our base to visit the wineries and Kaikoura. It is about 10 minutes from the airport (we flew in) and from town. The wineries of Marlborough are everywhere in the vicinity. The problem is picking which ones to visit! The cottages fit our needs perfectly. Great bed. Best shower head with good water pressure and lots of hot water. Clyde and Helen were in the house behind and adjacent to the cottages. But the only time we saw them was when we went there. Otherwise we had perfect privacy. Clyde made excellent restaurant recommendation. In summary, this accommodation is better than it's website shows. Recommended.

Our criterion for selecting lodgings is as follows: Cleanliness, Privacy, Well appointed Kitchen, Location (close to sights), and Internet Access. Walnut Block Cottage met or exceeded our expectations in each category. We spent two nights with Clyde and found him to be a helpful and delightful host. The view of the sunset over the vineyard was striking. We highly recommend Walnut Block Cottages as your lodging in the Marlborough Wine Area.

We stayed 3 nights at the Walnut Block in Blenheim and enjoyed our stay. Clyde (the host) has a house nearby where you can go if you have any questions. We didn't have to though and cocooned ourselves for the duration, popping out to the local supermarkets a couple of times to buy meat for the BBQ, Fish and Chips etc.

The apartment comes equipped with free internet (plug into the wall). We had some problems with the connection which I'm sure could have been resolved if we'd have brought it to Clyde's attention, but it didn't bother us that much. It also comes with breakfast items in the fridge such as yogurt, butter, milk... and there is bread, cereal, olive oil, tea, coffee etc as well.

There's a sink, microwave and portable electric hob (2 rings) in the kitchen with pots and pans, which we used from time to time. Handy. There's also Sky TV in the room and the bed was very conformable.

If you want some solitude and quiet, with a nice view of some vines, I recommend this place.

My husband, myself and our 18-mth old daughter stayed here for 4 nights.

Clyde and Helen have struck the perfect balance for guests. Offering classy, comfy and well equipped accomodation with an informal service that isn't overbearing in the slightest.

We loved:
The across the vineyard to the mountains in the sun-drenched start of teh day
The just picked cherries hand delivered to our door
Chasing our daughter through the rows of vines
Tasting such great Riesling in many of the cellar doors
The bed - it's true it is the best

You do need a car but that's to be expected if you want true peace and quiet. There's alot to do nearby like visiting the Marlborough Sounds and walking the Queen Charlotte Track. Visit the Saturday (or Sunday?) farmers market. We took a walk on the beach (a 5 min drive away) at 5pm which was great. Plus trying out the wine on offer.

We loved our stay so much we cancelled our trip to the Abel Tasman and stayed put instead.

If we learnt anything from our stay here it was that you do need a car to get around! The cottages are great and very private, at least two miles from town. Helen made us welcome, despite the fact that we showed up a day early! A great place if you want more independence from your accommodation and to be able to pace yourself in your eating and drinking! Everything was top quality in the cottage including the wine from the vineyard! We had a great few days here celebrating my partner's birthday in various vineyards and restaurants! Hence we can recommend Wairau Valley and Highfield Estate for lunch, Scotts also, Gibbs was great for dinner, very friendly and reasonable too - and of course not forgetting our personal favourite Cloudy Bay!

Walnut Block Cottage is one of two cottages situated in the heart of Walnut Block Estate in Blenheim, in the Marlborough region in South Island, New Zealand. While being in a secluded spot, it is only 3 km from town and cafes. It is definitely described as "contemporary" with modern trappings like free internet connection, modern open plan layout, yet in a rural setting. Despite very cold and wet weather, we had a very enjoyable time, drinking excellent wine from the estate and chilling out. The biggest surprise for us was the gourmet breakfast supplies in the pantry, nothing spared, to make one feel at home, yet a great impression into the thoughts behind it. The bed was comfy, the lounge suite classy, the kitchen well equipped and the entertainment units like TV, audio are all up to high standards. Heated floor in the bathroom, that's the crowning glory! So, if one's stuck indoors for inclement weather, it was not half as bad. The hosts who live nearby, respect your privacy, yet friendly enough to make you feel welcomed. Will definitely revisit in different season.
