“Feeding Kings”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 10, 2007

I stayed here at Greengables with my partner for a full week and it was our best stay on a three month tour. Each evening we agreed a time for breakfast the following morning which was laid out to feed a king, hence the title to my review!! Fresh fruit, yogurts, three cereals, toast (breads of your choice), a range of preserves/honey, continental, full english, tea, coffee and a choice of fruit juices. There is no better way to start a day than to be fed well and enjoy some great conversations with your hosts; Mike and Debbie.

Both Mike and Debbie have an extensive knowledge of the immediate area and of further afield. If you go there with a full idea of what to do or no idea at all you will be supplied with the best info available for wine tasting, scenic drives, eating out and all the usual requirements of the traveller. Most wine tasting in the area is a turn up and taste arrangement but some require bookings, no bother here either; Mike and Debbie will phone ahead for you and book tours, resturaunts. .. .. there is no end to the help they will provide you. A good knowledge of ferry crossings and car hire etc is also held by your two hosts.

The house is set in a very modest few acres with an olive grove, fruit tree's and a beautiful garden to relax and unwind in. Beyond the garden is a river running from Blenhiem past the grounds of Greengables providing a lovely setting to drink your recently bought wine while throwing some waves to the passing River Queen paddle steamer under the purples and oranges of the setting sun. The house itself is huge, the upstairs is entirely guest accomodation with large, fully furnished, comfortable rooms. There is free broadband to use should you need to email, check flights and other arrangements as well.

Greengables is a must if you intend to stay in the Marborough area, be it for one night or longer, for business or for leisure, it exceeds all of your requirements. Accompanied with Mike and Debbie as your hosts you are taken in as friends before customers. You will be sorry to leave and will always remember your stay here very fondly.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2006

We spent three months travelling around New Zealand, staying at B&Bs. This was our favourite, so much so that we had to go back for a second visit as it felt so much like home. Debbie and Mike, the proprietors, could not be more accommodating and cannot do enough for their guests. Dinner can be provided with 24 hours notice, and we were welcomed with a home-cooked meal and glass of local Marlborough wine on our arrival. Breakfasts were a delight, with fresh fruit, Debbie’s home-made preserves and baking every morning, together with a cooked breakfast with freshly laid eggs from their own hens.

Green Gables is well set up for the modern traveller with a wireless connection linked to broadband. If you are sensible not to travel with your laptop, they also have a computer for guests’ use in the upstairs study (free of charge). The house is spacious and the rooms very clean, nicely decorated and presented well. The house is set in a superb garden on the banks of the Opawa River - it was very relaxing, after a hard-day's wine tasting and sight-seeing, to sit there in the evening with a gin and tonic before dinner.

Don’t let the State Highway 1 put you off as the house is down a long drive and the rooms are very quiet. Debbie and Mike are great ambassadors to Blenheim and Marlborough by giving good advice on wineries, restaurants and the local bays and beaches. For those touring the country, they will telephone to book your next B&B.

Oh, they have three cats who are all laid back. They do not encourage them into the guests area (which is the whole upstairs of the house) nor the guests rooms, however if you are in dire need for a feline cuddle there is always one available.

  • Liked — the ambience - very casual, laid back and we felt Debbie and Mike were our friends
  • Disliked — There was nothing to dislike
  • Tips/Secrets — Don't plan to diet or be teetotal in the Marlborough wine country
