“Modern Clean and Amazingly Comfortable Beds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

Four of us stayed in a two bed two storey house both with ensuites. We had a very pleasant lady show us how everything worked and the facilities were excellent although we didn't cook or do any washing. Everything was clean and tidy and we all agreed that the beds were really comfortable and nice and big. Wi fi was a bit hit and miss but the lady did say that if we had rung her she could have sorted it out for us. We had just come over on the ferry from the North Island and this resort is a nice short 30 min from the port. We drove into the next village and ate at the English pub which was very pleasant and welcoming .

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 4, 2013

We stayed here for 3 nights in January, and really enjoyed it. The multi bedroom homes are lovely -- not luxurious, but nicely appointed with all the expected amenities. We especially got good use out of the grill, set in a lovely location right in front of the vineyards.

My only disappointment seems minor, but at the same time, there's really no reason for a problem like this in such an expensive property. To sum up: restrictive internet access. Are you kidding me? They gave us one code, good for only one device at a time. In a world of Kindles, phones, tablets, laptops -- all of which we had with us -- the requirement to continually log out of one device, pass the code over to another person, and log back in is ridiculous. Fixing that simple thing would bring my rating up by a star or maybe two.

I would recommend this for groups, not couples, as you really are getting two-bedroom homes and you therefore pay for it - but regardless, we enjoyed our stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in #10 -- on the corner of the property, right up against the vineyards. Great choice!

2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 11, 2012

We recently stayed in this advertised 5 star retreat. Not 5 star at all. There were several things broken and the place was not really clean when we arrived. Peanuts were still on the floor under the coffee table, bins were not emptied daily and the chap in reception was bordering on rude. We were told there were two ensuites, but no not even one. There were spearate bathrooms and one at the other end of the house away from the bedroom. Not good for elderly people getting up in the night. Pots and pans were cheap quality and you couldn't fry anything in the frypan as it just burnt and stuck. Absolutely hopeless. 2 small pots and no larger one was available.
The propery is away over priced for what it is and I can't imagine Qualmark giving it a 5 star. I have stayed in far better places that were only 4 star.

Dear Chris and Dave

Thank you for taking the time to post this review about Vintners Retreat.

I am so sorry that your visit was such a disappointment and wish you had voiced your concerns to us at the time, especially given that you are in the same industry. It would have helped us identify the member of staff responsible for cleaning and servicing your property, and which Villa had the ‘things broken’ so we could repair or replace them during your stay. Our Housekeepers have been made aware of your comments and are very sorry.

I have no idea who informed you that there were two en suites in your Villa – our website offers a clear and detailed description of each property type, and only our Stables offer two en suite bathrooms. Should anyone reserve a Villa over the telephone we also give a detailed description of the layout of each Villa to avoid any misunderstanding. Again, it would have been very helpful if you had been able to speak to us, and let us know who gave you a false description.

Kind regards
Shulah George - Manager

Footnote: For others reading this review, our kitchens have one stock pot, two saucepans and a frying pan. They are not Teflon coated, but are stainless steel Wiltshire brand. This review implies that we are falsely claiming to be a 5 Star Accommodation Provider. We are graded 5 Star under the Qualmark ‘Apartment’ category. Qualmark is New Zealand tourism’s official assurance organisation and we are listed on their website.

The Vintners Retreat is gorgeous. A small complex of 10 villas with views along the vines towards the mountains. Located just out of Blenheim at Renwick with vineyards all around it is very peaceful.
2 days on a 'Grabone' special gave us the opportunity to try this out. The 2 storey villa we had was vast, beautifully furnished and very relaxing. We used only 1 of the kingsize bedrooms but there is loads of space should 2 couples or a family stay.
This would be the first place we would look for in the area in future to stay.

Room Tip: 2 storey villas seem to have the best views.

Terrific property, superbly furnished and equipped. Beautiful views all round and lovely setting. Luxury living with a bottle of Giesen Pinot Noir on the table and a Giesen cheese platter to go with the evening ,meal. the microwave was not working but we didn't use it so no worries. Some may find the garage a tad tight if your mirrors don't fold in. A lot of noise from plumbing when using the handbasin in the bathroom, sounds like waste pipe expanding and contracting. No sound insulation between bathroom and main bedroom so as the toilet backs onto the same wall as the bedhead you get the full works! The heat pump in the lounge struggles and is noisy, with no doors to stop the heat loss the lounge is cool but the bedrooms are hot. Otherwise if the weather is OK then this place is very good. Location cannot be faulted.

Thank you very much for your review - we are very glad you enjoyed the goodies supplied by Giesen! I apologise for the faulty microwave – we have in fact just replaced all microwaves throughout the property as we noticed a number of displays were no longer working. The garages are indeed snug for larger vehicles, Vintners Retreat was designed some years ago and the popularity of large vehicles has increased since then!

Kind regards

Comfortable and roomy two bedroom, two bath apartment. Very comfy beds. Second bathroom was adjacent to the lounge and not near the bedrooms but still it was nice for our friend to have a bathroom all to himself. This unit scores high on space and comfortable furnishings but not so great on "the little things". Wifi is free as long as you don't use it too much - limited bandwidth. Kitchen lacked some basic tools. You can't prepare much of a meal with two bread knives and no paring knife or chef's knife. We stayed for two nights and after the first night I bought my own knives. I also discovered on our last night that the heating element in the unit's clothes dryer was burnt out. I dried our clothes by hanging them on the heated towel racks. I would expect a hotel that claims 5 stars to verify that their equipment works. Good location and easy to find. Great access to the local vineyards. Nice big patio with a BBQ but not covered and therefore useless when it is raining - which it did for our entire visit unfortunately. Some sort of cover over the patio would be a great addition.

Thank you very much for your review - we found it most helpful! I agree with you about the kitchen knives and have duly replaced them throughout the property with far more suitable five knife sets. I do apologise for the faulty dryer – at times equipment does break down without our knowledge. Worth mentioning is that Vintners Retreat offers 500 megabyte free wireless internet to guests, however our current policy is one log-on per Villa. In the last couple of years we have noticed a large increase in the use of tablets and smart-phones, and in light of this we will be reviewing our policy in the near future.

We also agree with you about Wairau River - they consistently generate great reviews – we are lucky to have them as our neighbours.

Kind regards

The location is unbeatable. This is the perfect place to stay with a group, rent bikes and do a leisurely vineyard tour (give yourself a couple of days here, at least!). The villas are spotless, overlook the surrounding vineyards and have everything you could need. Other than the high price (which is understandable considering the real estate), I have absolutely no complaints and would love to return someday. Staying here was one of the highlights of my trip to NZ. Lunch at Wairau River - a 5 minute walk away - is highly recommended.
