“Beautiful - comfy - spacious - interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2009

The room was spacious and interestingly irregular shaped with a box window looking over the pool and lawn. The architecture is just like a chateau hence the place is well named. The furnishings in our room were all new - looks like the renovations must have recently been completed. Bed was comfy with good pillow options. The bar/cafe was great with high ceiling, friendly staff and a good choice of food and drink options. I would certainly stay again - a great price on Wotif made it even more pleasing. Checkout was a bit slow with the desk unattended for about 5 minutes, but hey, who is in a hurry anyway. Central location right next to town.

Ate twice at the restaurant ,breakfast and dinner. Both meals were excellent and a good choice of local wines.

1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 18, 2009

Me and my girlfriend decided to stay one night at this Hotel as we would be checking in late from a long drive and we were given the impression that this would be a luxury 5 star hotel. Well we were bitterly disappointed; the receptionist was rude from the start and had a "I am very busy so just go to your room already" attitude. There was construction going on but that wasn't such an inconvenience. When we arrived at our room, we saw 1 king sized bed and one single, we had specified only 1 king bed in our reservation. We though it was just a mistake so went back to the receptionist who seemed almost angry that she had to speak with us again so soon. Well to our surprise and disgust, she told us there is nothing she could do. I have been to 4 star hotels where they actually care about their guests and offer another room or an upgrade to maintain their high level of service.

Other small things include being misled on their advertising that we would have a full kitchen when it was only a kitchenette.
Also no 24 hour reception service as we had to wait around 30 minutes in the lobby for the lady in the bar to take our keys.

Very very bad experience, would never recommend this Hotel as a 5 star experience to anyone.

Thank you for your review. I noted that you stayed in December 2008 and yes can accept that we were in the middle of construction. We feel that we managed the needs of guests through this time with the comfort and safety of guests paramount at all times. We have had our 5 star self contained and serviced rating accredited again this year and it is a very thorough assessment.
In general our comments on our staff are very positive as you can see from other reviews. I am sorry that you felt that this wasnt the case on this occassion. Had I been made aware of your feelings at the time of your stay and not 8 months later I may have been able to address these issues. The extensions at the Chateau are completed and have been welcomed by our guests Thank you again for your feedback and I am sorry at your disappointment.

Lovely looking hotel, helpful staff, internet connections not fantastic was my only quibble. We didn't try the in-house restaurant but staff reserved tables for us at other places, which was excellent - they even have a book of menus behind reception. Recommend the Hotel D'Urville restaurant in town, or travel out to Vintners Retreat.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 14, 2009

We stayed here for three nights in April 09 in one of the new suites with washing machine, microwave etc. Rooms were excellent, nice bathrooms with heated floors, large very comfortable beds, air con and flat screens in all rooms. Easy walking to main centre of Blenheim and and walking tracks along river. Nice bistro style restaurant with reasonably priced food. Wireless Internet available in rooms or desktops in foyer but is not included in price (annoying, should be included in room price like running water, but like most hotels is not). Available by 'scratch' card from the front desk. We had a very happy and pleasant stay. Pricing for quality of accom reasonable (especially in NZ dollars). Highly recommended.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 29, 2009

The Chateau Marlborough is a lovely property set adjacent to Seymour Square in Blenheim. I have stayed here of three occassions in the past year. The rooms are nicely furnished and always spotlessly clean. They have flat screen televisions, comfortable beds and good linen. There is no air conditioning in the rooms which can be issue in the Summer as Blenheim gets very warm. The bathrooms are clean and tidy and the showers have excellent pressure.

The hotel is currently undergoing a refurbishment. They have recently completed a new wing of the hotel and the existing wings are being upgraded. When I stayed here, there was the usual dust and mayhem of a refurbishment in the hallways but that didn't detract from the experience. It will soon be completed and will be a much better Hotel for it.

Where the Chateau Marlborough constantly lets itself down is the staff. They are all very pleasant and mean well but there really is an amateur feel to almost everything they do. For instance, on my last stay, it took 45 minutes after I placed my order for my breakfast to arrive. Whilst the new restaurant and bar is a stunning venue, I had read the daily newspaper from the front to back covers and was staring into space for at least 15 minutes. When it arrived, there was no coffee or orange juice as I had ordered. They have a flat screen television in the restaurant but it wasn't on - no breakfast news. When I went to check out, it took my 10 minutes to find the receptionist. There is a bit of an air of 'Faulty Towers' about the staff.

All in all, the Chateau Marlborough is a good property. You really cannot fault the rooms or the common areas of the hotel - modern and spacious. They need a professional hotelier to run this property professionally and upskill the staff. This would take this Hotel from good to great.

  • Liked — The accommodation is very good with spotlessly clean rooms & good quality linen.
  • Disliked — The amatuer employees
