“Outstanding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 27, 2014 via mobile

We spent Christmas 2012 at this wonderful B&B with our two teenage children. Although thousands of miles away, we felt like we were with family. Need I say more? The food was scrumptious and the rooms were impeccable. We ride their bicycles around the countryside, soaked our tired legs in the chilly river and just enjoyed the open spaces; a wonderful three days.

This is a beautiful B&B in a gorgeous setting with the nicest hosts. Trudy and Barry recently bought the B&B and vineyard from the prior owners and they couldn't be better hosts. The place is beautifully kept up. The room is very large with a separate sitting area and its own terrace looking out on the vineyard and the valley. Trudy kindly gave us a bottle of wine with grapes from the vineyard to enjoy in our room. And they cooked us an excellent breakfast. We had dinner and went on a tour of Hans Hertzog Vineyard while we were there and would also highly recommend that.

We stayed one night at the Straw Lodge in September 2013. Nettie and Jane were the most gracious hostesses one could ask for, and I fell in love with giant Texas immediately. The room was very comfortable and private, and we took full advantage of the bicycles as to explore the river and surrounding vineyards. I was initially concerned the Straw Lodge could be too far from town, but it turned out to be a perfect, quiet, peaceful getaway that spoiled you with luxurious seclusion. Jane set a new standard for eggs benedict (best hollandaise ever!), and we purchased a number of their delightful World's End label wines to enjoy back in the States. Would absolutely return - but would stay for at least two nights next time around!

Room Tip: ask Nettie and Jane for recommendations regarding which vineyards to visit and other activities... a...

Our little cottage was separate from the main building and 2 suites.
It was a sweet place, separate bedroom, lounge/kitchen, laundry area, outside patio where we bbq'd our own steaks.
Kitchen was made of beautifully made NZ wooden cabinetry, good size w full sized fridge, coffee plunger. Took cup of tea to bed, opened the curtains and watched the vineyard dawning.

Great hosts, very clever and affable. They have one of the best welcoming late afternoons. Bill had finished his day's work in the vineyard, and joined us in the enclosed outdoor area for wine and shared deli platter. Once we finished one bottle, a second was very quickly produced!!

We elected to have breakfast in the main guest area, and it was very lovely.

Golf clubs were loaned to us, and we were given the best tips for places to play golf. We elected for a little 9 hole course, where the green fees were posted in an envelope in an honesty box.

Bill kindly drove us to a restaurant for our evening meal, and we arranged a taxi back. With all the wonderful wine, it's worth not driving of an evening!

Room Tip: either the suites, or the cottage. The 2 suites have a nice outlook, and are made of straw. The co...

Having read all the previous reviews we were looking forward to somewhere special to end our holiday in NZ. We certainly found it. Nettie, Bill & Jane were superb hosts from the moment we arrived until our sad departure. We arrived early evening to a pre-arranged platter absolutely full of fresh local produce accompanied by their own 'Worlds End' extremely drinkable & excellent Sav blanc. Their own Pinot was also available but we just loved the white.
Our Hosts made a point of meeting us for complimentary drinks on the first evening to get to know us, a really nice touch, lacking at other B & b's we have stayed at on this trip.
During our stay we were offered a walk around the vines to learn a bit about wine & all absolutely loved it. Nettie, accompanied by Texas took us through the vine growing & grape picking process including tasting the odd grape to compare the different flavours & textures of the different grape varieties.
Our rooms, suites one & two were spacious, with huge beds & every thing we could need. I was a little disappointed at first to find no bath ( what did I expect in a straw eco-house?) but the shower was powerful & roomy so no real problem. We were also offered use of the hot tub, so after a days cycling around the vinyards, a good soak in the tub was most welcome.
As well as our bedrooms we had use of a guests dining room & lounge, shared between the two suites. As we were a party of four we had both suites & the other areas to ourselves.
Breakfast was everything you would expect with a wide range of cereals, home made fruit salads, jams etc etc. All you could ask - and more.
One of the evenings we cooked a meal on their huge gas BBQ finished off with strawberries freshly picked from their own garden. What more could you ask.
Without doubt this was the nicest of all the stops on our tour, a relaxing heaven with fantastic hosts. Definitely a 5 star memory..

Our stay at the Straw Lodge was fantastic: Nettie, Jane, BIll and Texas really gave us a lovely time. First of all, the lodge is located in the middle of the vineyard, with an incredible view on the mountains. These same vines that produces a great Sauvignon Blanc that we had a chance to taste with the other guests. Breakfasts and dinner had an atmosphere of that kind of place where the time stops and everything is peaceful. We can't recommend the Straw Lodge more, it's definitely the highlight of our trip.

My wife & I were lucky enough to spend a few days at the Straw Lodge in early March and felt like we wanted to move in! This cozy place is just a bit outside of the downtown Blenheim area on a little boutique winery (with some very delicious wine!). Nettie & Jane are so friendly and easy to talk with...they make you feel like you're family. The rooms are spacious, nicely decorated, and just very comfortable.

We were treated to some delicious snacks (made largely from the on-site garden) and wine tasting & also had some of the best breakfasts ever during our stay. There are some bikes available to go riding around the vineyards and Nettie can also help you plan for other dining and wine tasting experiences while you're in beautiful Marlborough wine country. We can't wait to go back!
