“Fantastic - HIGHLY recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2011

My wife and I stayed at this B&B for 6 nights. We used it as a home base to explore the fabulous wine-country of South Island, as well as to take more extended day trips down the coast and into the mountains.

We almost exclusively stay at high-end resorts, and thus our standards are high. Coming to the Pepper Tree was a bit of a roll of the dice for us, as we hadn't heard of it before and really weren't sure of its quality. In NZ unfortunately B&Bs typically aren't that great.

We were so pleasantly surprised! The house itself is lovely - a huge old colonial structure set in a massive garden and vineyard, covered with flowers. And the owners were even more lovely - a Swiss couple who moved to NZ some years back. Being Swiss one might expect great efficiency and attention to detail - and we got exactly that. The service (and food) was topnotch in every respect.

The rooms were perfect, overlooking the wonderful garden. Really the only downside was the sound of birdsong in the morning - so loud that it woke us up at dawn.

The owners are charming people and great fun to talk to. We had a terrific time and were sorry to go.

I can not recommend this B&B more highly. If you find yourself staying in the NE corner of South Island, and are looking for a combination of laid-back NZ charm and Swiss efficiency, then this is the place to go!

This luxurious farm homstead provided us a "total expierence"! Owners, Heidi and Werner pay attention to detail in every aspect and are perfect, gracious hosts. From the lush designer decor, the gardens, the farm land and the beautiful "homemade" full gourmet breakfast this place has it all!! Try to stay at least two nights!! You will be sadto leave but will have a big smile!

Heidi and Werner are delightful, charming and attentive hosts for whom nothing is too much trouble. They have created elegant accommodation within an original homestead building in lovely gardens just outside Blenheim. Each bedroom is furnished in a different style and colour seheme - the Venetian Room is exquisite and opens up onto a lovely little terrace in the garden. Breakfasts are wonderul - with an interesting range of buffet items and a daily special cooked item - each one of which is delicious and beautifully presented. We were fortunate to have a four day stay, during which Heidi made good recommendations for restaurants and booked them all for us. All we had to was enjoy!

No need to say more - I echo every word of the last review. We too did not want to eat out one evening and Heidi's cold platter was a treat, visually and in taste. We didn't want to leave after our three nights.

We stayed at the Peppertree for 3 days and would love to have stayed longer. Our room was delightful, with french doors opening onto a private section of the lovely garden so that we could spend a relaxed evening enjoying one of Heidi's cold platters washed down with the Peppertree's own home-grown wine - it was great to be able to do this when we didn't feel like driving out to a restaurant. So many small details make this place special, like the fruits straight from the garden - plums, kiwis, greengages, peaches - and really comfortable accommodation with everything we needed. Breakfast was superb, beautifully cooked and presented, with the freshest of ingredients, home made preserves and the best bircher muesli ever. There is a casual elegance about the house and garden, which nestle at the foot of hills that are great for walking and getting views of the surrounding vineyards, including Werner's own where he grows the grapes for his very good chardonnay. Our hosts were really helpful with advice on local wineries (Hunters do an excellent lunch), restaurants, etc, as well as being most hospitable and welcoming, yet never imposing on our privacy. They also had a good wi-fi connection which was important to us. A definite place to stay if we manage to get back to NZ - if they're not fully booked!

We spent a night at the Peppertree Lodge, just outside of Blenheim, and really enjoyed our stay. Heidi and Werner were fantastic hosts and really made us feel at home. After showing us around the house, we strolled around the vinyard, olive grove and gardens, visited part of the wine county on Heidi's recommendation, and gathered with all the other guests for a drink - their homemade wine (very good!) and homemade olive oils/dishes as an apetizer. The room we had was spacious and had a nice little garden, the bathroom was a bit cold but nice and large. Breakfast was delicious - homemade breads, jams, cooked eggs, fresh ham and cheese - just perfect!
