“Disappointing”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2013

We booked a large group and the pre-booking was excellent, friendly and very helpful. But unfortunately the food and service on the night was not very good. Steak was thin and over cooked, vegetables were just boiled without any sauce, the vegetarian dish was not very nice either. Only a couple of people enjoyed their meals. We never got offered dessert and when we asked were told the kitchen was closed. The waitresses were not that friendly and they completely mucked up the bill and had no idea what was ours on the bill and what was not. They turned the lights out on our side of the restaurant while we were still seated and started closing up. Will try again but every other Ale House we love, this one was a let down.

“Lunch was average”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

The floor was dirty, but the beer was good. Food was average. We took the kids and there was colouring in for them with good quality pencils (all sharp too which is unusual!). I had a burger which was good, but my husbands mushroom risotto was watery and it was a rather mean portion. He ate most of my chips as he was still hungry.

“Always consistent, this time family friendly too!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

We have eaten here so many times over the years and always had great food and great service but this time was different, we were celebrating a business success, my babes birthday, and a family reunion. A lunchtime with a difference with four adults and three kids, one under one. We chose the covered in outside area so as not to be too rowdy if the youngest played up (she was the perfect little lady as it turned out ) and set about ordering. A pleasant surprise to find out that the other two children got their main meals free as a school holiday special, with colour in menus with food that suited them and a bunch of crayons each to keep them happy whilst we spoke of adult things. The kids ordered and we followed suit with us ordering either the to die for lamb shanks or the black cherry chicken. Both are superb meals accompanied by the big bread loaves and a variety of drinks - their wine list is great although I did miss my favourite Rock Bare, a lovely Oz red which had disappeared from the list. The food was superb and the kids had their extra treat with some ice cream sundaes which made all the adults jealous even though we were completely full from our mains. And the price? $136 for 4 adults and three children. This is a great place to dine, really relaxing with pleasant and great service. Will we be back? Of course!!!

“Delicious food, awesome staff!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 1, 2013

We ate at a Speight's Ale House in Dunedin a few months ago but it was nowhere near as good as this one! The food was delicious, we went for lunch but ended up having a dessert as well because it was so nice. The staff were very polite and friendly and the atmosphere was also nice and cozy. I loved the place, it was great!

“Hearty yet sophisticated”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

We have eaten here a few times and each time has been a pleasure. Even when we arrived in a peak 'after work' period on a Friday evening, we were promptly found a table and seated. The food has always been of a high standard, sophisticated but really hearty with many home favorites on the menu like lambs fry and fish n chips. The service has been consistently good with Simon a very friendly and helpful host. It is definitely our preferred choices of restaurant in the area.
