“A Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Stayed here as part of a small conference organised at the hotel.

A warm welcome and seamless check in greeted us on arrival.
Rooms are spacious and modern with all facilities of a 4 1/2 star hotel.
It was nice to see a modern hotel which still has a full sized bath.

The conferencing side of things were well catered for and organised efficiently.

FOOD: The food at Rydges as just supurb! From an absolutely flawless 6 star breakfast offering to wonderful lunch and dinner options, it was really impressive. The atmosphere at the restaurant and bar was warm, cosy and relaxed.

Location is the key to most hotels, and this hotel is located close to the Railway Station and Parliament. As a result, although it may be a lovely walk along the waterfront on a sunny day, it's a bit far to walk at night to and from the entertainment hub of Wellington (Te Papa, Cuba St and Courtney Place).

I REALLY recommend this property, however would advise that you call a taxi to/from restaurants/nightlife as it's a long, cold walk.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the top floor overlooking the water, otherwise you'll be look out at other b...

We spent the weekend here after reading the reviews. We have not been disappointed. Checkin-in was a breeze, with the staff friendly and efficient.

The room on 10th gloor facing the city was a decent size and was clean and welcoming, (as one would expect from a 4*). It was incredibly hot and stuffy (as the afternoon sun shines straight into the room) so I recommend leaving the aircon on low when you go out.
The kitchenette is a good idea and the microwave was a bonus.
The walls are a bit thin and the bathroom is far from soundproof lol.
The Leisure centre consists of a lovely lap pool and spacious sauna. It also has a tiny cardio room that consists of a treadmill, an exercise bike and a small set of dumb bells.
Overall a very good stay. Would stay again.

Having stayed only in 5 star hotels in Wellington (typically Intercontinental & The Museum), the Rydges though not pitching to be that level exceeded my expectations.

The service was friendly from reception, housekeeping to the Portlander restaurant and overall just made it a very pleasant experience.

The Portlander is serves good fare, similar to a gastro-pub and has a great vibe. Can attest to the oysters being uber fresh and the service outstanding.

The only let down was that the room I got had a really noisy a/c system and constant wafts of sewerage smells from the plumbing. Otherwise had it not been for these issues, I would recommend the hotel for being extraordinary value for what you get.

Room Tip: Rooms on the West side of the building get terribly hot so arriving in the evening from a day out fe...

Our group stayed at this hotel for a couple of nights. Service was descent although staff looked a little stern. Maybe we were just used to seeing all smiles everywhere else. Nonetheless, very pleasant stay. Rooms were clean and tidy, and service was overall good. Fantastic location since we enjoyed walking and some city attractions were not too far. Would recommend this hotel. Only wish they offered free wifi!

Although the entrance to Rydges is unprepossessing, being right on the street, inside is typical of many a good quality hotel. The staff are freindly enough, not gushing, but very helpful. The location is ideal to explore the main town and the wharf with its ferry terminals. The Portlander Restaurant within doubles up as the bar, is excellent, and serves good normal fare. I had a suite as I was upgraded; this was excellent and spacious, and with a small kitchinette in which to largely cater for myself ( my stay here was three and a half weeks). Nearby, in the Railway station is the excellent NW Supermarket, which is as good as any that I've seen anywhere in the world. The wi-fi is very expensive but there is a 50% reduction if you join their loyalty programme (for free). I think this is an excellent place to stay in New Zealand's capital.

Room Tip: Ask to be upgraded to a suite, although the normal room are good too.

We stayed at the Rydges for two nights in our first visit to Wellington. I have to say that it was one of the best all round hotel experiences that we've had. The buffet breakfast in the Portlander matches any breakfast that we've had in the world and that is saying something.

The room was a very good 4 star hotel room. I would say that it matches Hilton standards. The views of the harbour that we had were really nice (if you ignored what surely is the ugliest building in Wellington - the NZ Post building - on the left). The location is good enough to walk to most places in 15 mins.

The pool was ok. The jacuzzi was way too hot and you could hardly call it a jacuzzi to be honest so is definitely one part that didn't live up to expectations.

Nonetheless, it was a great value experience. Members should check out the discounts at the wonderful Portlander restaurant as well!

The hotel is in a very convenient location, being within walking distance of all of the CBD attractions e.g. the Beehive and only a short drive to those further out. The hotel is pretty well appointed and clean (although a little dated in the bathroom). We chose a 'double-double' room and it was quite good value after a small discount for joining their loyalty programme. The room was quiet (apart from the AC unit), but did not come supplied with much of a view (it overlooked a dreary office block). The hotels Wi-fi was adequate, but obviously would have been better if it was free. The only real down-side for me was having to pay 30 bucks per night to park the car. This was a valet service only and the car was clearly parked outdoors at some stage, given the rain marks on the windscreen. However, overall, I would recommend this hotel to travellers.

Room Tip: Try and secure one with a view.
