“Apartment-style flexibility, but many problems including construction and intern”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2008

Location:
The Aitken is located on the north end of the downtown Wellington area. It's about a 5 minute walk to the parliament buildings and about a 15 - 20 minute walk to the Te Papa museum. There's a supermarket about 2 blocks to the north and the train station (and shuttle to the Interislander ferry) is about 2 blocks to the south west.

Room:
One of the biggest advantages of the Aitken is that it is stocked as an apartment and has a fridge, washer/dryer combo, oven, range, microwave and dishwasher. We only had the chance to use the washer/dryer and we had some problems with it. While the wash cycle worked fine, we had to run the dryer cycle twice and even then our laundry was still damp.

Another issue we had was that when we arrived, there was used soap in the shower. That made us question if the apartment had been fully cleaned since the last guests left.

Yet another problem was the lockbox at the front where we were to receive our keys the night of our arrival. Since we were arriving late, we contacted them ahead of time and they gave us a code we could enter on the security box at their front door. Unfortunately, the security box was basically broken and wouldn't take the code... fortunately (for us), we were able to slip our key out without ever getting the code entered successfully. While it was nice that we were able to get into our room, it wasn't very reassuring for the security of the building.

Maybe the biggest issue we had though, was the massive construction project that was going on right outside our window. We started to hear construction workers at about 5AM the morning after we arrived... that escalated into frequent riveting-machine noises at about 7:30AM. Fortunately for us, we needed to get up early that day... but if you get a room facing the construction project, don't count on getting a sound night sleep unless you're an early riser.

Internet:
While this location claimed to have free, unlimited wireless Internet, we had a number of problems with it. For one, we arrived late (after midnight) on our first night and called down to the reception to get an access code. We were told that we'd arrived too late and we couldn't get a code until the morning.

The next morning we called down and got a code. We were able to connect, but got an extremely poor connection. There was only one very small corner of the room where we could get a reliable connection. It generally took about 5 times as long to access any given web site as I would expect with a good connection.

My wife and I stayed here for one night only, and I would recommend it only for very short stays. The neighborhood seems a bit sketchy and is loud. We arrived after the lobby was closed, and had to dig for our key in the drop box, since we were never given a passcode. The room is very, very small seems to be filled with furniture from an old K-Mart (do they have those in NZ?).

This is a budget hotel, in a loud neighborhood, with a small room... if this is what you are looking for, The Aitken is for you... and I really do not know how this is rated 4th best in Wellington.

I'll start off with saying that it is an excellent hotel, overall, and in a very convenient area.

Now to launch into the negatives:
Construction next door. Our room was on the 5th floor. How convenient they were building an office building right next door (could have climbed out the window onto the scaffolding) and were busy pouring the 5th floor. At 7:30am the noise began. We couldn't open our drapes during the day if we wanted any privacy. I should think that if you asked for a room on the other sides of the hotel you would be fine.

Reception open until 5 on weekends and holidays: We arrived 10 minutes to 5 on Easter Monday after a very long drive in terrible traffic. We were tired (which is probably why we didn't ask for another room when we checked in) and lost our key when we went to park the car. We got back to the hotel (parking structure is 1 short block away) and couldn't get in. You need need a key fob just to get into the lobby area. We buzzed the duty manager but never got through. We called the phone number posted outside, thanks to Subway next door letting us use the phone, and it took a while to get someone to come out and help. They did give us a spare key but it took a while to sort it out.

When we got to the room after the above mess, we found our door was unlocked. Be sure you have the door locked! It's not self locking, as we were used to in other hotels.

Room is small but we knew that. Washer/dryer combo very small and takes a very very long time. Plus, it takes a rocket scientist to understand the symbols on it. The manufacturer labeled the buttons with symbols and not words and the instructions in the hotel manual were barely adequate. OK if you want to wash everything on high heat otherwise sort out the symbols yourself and ignore instructions.

Very stuffy in room. Windows opened only a few inches and we didn't want to leave them open during the day due to construction.

Computer in lobby/Internet $5 for 2 hours. You must use it in one shot. Not good if you just need to check email or check into a flight and that's all. Also, it closes when the reception area closes so forget about going online at night. We used the internet at the visitor's center in town.

The pluses:
Great location. Very short walk to anything and everything in Wellington but far enough away as well so the traffic on our little street was light. Train & bus stations just a few blocks. The stadiums are really close and walking distance even after an event at night.

Full kitchen which was well equipped (for 3). Supermarket about a 10 minute walk or a few minute drive.

Free wifi, if you've brought your own computer. Annoyance that if you check in late or don't set it up, you have to wait until morning as you need a code from reception.

Parking $15/day in covered parking structure. We thought that was reasonable and it was safe off the street for a few days. Street parking seems to be all metered.

Bed: small but comfortable.

Overall I'd say it is an excellent place to stay at a really good price. Just be sure you aren't on the construction side and get there early to check in (or have a mobile phone so you can call the mgr.) to be sure you get everything sorted out. I'd stay there again.

Same as most reviews! Great location near to beehive and the Tepapa musuem, tramp stops, Also just beside all the embassies and government offices! Yes it is a budget place with no luxury, but the rooms are fully loaded with all the day to day things you need (Fridge, Washing machine, Dishwasher, Ironing board, DvD player, Music system, Sky TV, alarm clocks. Most of the rooms are the size of average apartment but some rooms are very very small, so ensure you are in the right room! The area around is quiet and peaceful in the night! The hotel has no free parking, which might be a big problem for some. The staff is very friendly and helpful but the manager was a bit strange, he used to stand beside the reception staff but never say anything (Not even Hi). Anyway, the free wireless broadband came quiet handy to be in touch with my friends on skype, check mails, read news, plan the days, make bookins etc and was very fast too. The place is great value for money! I would love to stay there again!

Hotel is close to the Beehive and to Westpac Trust stadium. It is situated in a good spot to go touring around wellington city.

Rooms are size of average apartments in new zealand. They have self service kitchen and a toilet bathroom. It is serviced daily and is clean. Note that this place is not a hotel and therefore their service style is different and they dont have a 24 hour room service available. Also asking for extra milk/sugar etc would mean you would need to wait a while. We waited on this for half an hour and by that time our tea had gone cold. So would be ideal to take your own milk/sugar etc if you love tea or coffee...

They do not have free parking but parking on street is plenty and free after 6 pm weekdays and free all weekend.

All in all a nice clean place to stay.

We booked the Aitken on the strong reviews on Trip Advisor. While it is exactly what it is supposed to be, it's definitely not the 4th best hotel in Wellington! It's a budget traveler's hotel, and has sparce and small accommodations (hard bed, tiny shower, etc) But, it is very clean, very functional, and nicely situated. And, as everyone else noted, the washing machine and kitchenette is great! So, I'm fine with it being highly rated as long as people also note that it is a budget place!

If you're tight on cash, and want somewhere to settle into for a few days, this is a GREAT place. But, if you're looking for a nice lux apartment, check out the Bolton, which is much nicer but has all the great features of the Aitken. If you're young and spry, the Aitken is great!

  • Liked — Love the kitchenette and washer
  • Disliked — It's too spartan and basic for us, but a great 2-star place

Stayed at the Aitken for two nights. When we arrived no one was there, and had to wait for someone to come down and open the door. That is really the only problem with the place. They are not a full service hotel. If you want messages taken/passed on or any other "main desk" related service it is hit or miss as to if someone will do that for you.

On the plus side they give you a nice clean albeit small Australian/New Zealand style serviced apartment. (a nice concept in my opinion) You get an oven, silverware, fridge, dishwasher, bowls etc etc.. We had breakfasts in and even made dinner one night. There is a supermarket three blocks away to the east, and the cafe next door is very nice for breakfast and lunch. One block down is the train station bus stop, where you can get most any bus you might need.

Room was serviced well and the staff when I could find them were VERY friendly and helpful. We agreed that we would be happy to stay there again.
