Wow, what a lucky find. This hotel was undergoing renovations and had deep discounts. We booked a 2 bedroom unit that was like a small luxury apartment but at the price you'd pay for a nice motel rather than a luxury boutique hotel which this hotel certainly is.

The staff are ok, nothing special as in don't go out of their way to be helpful but luckily the pool, sauna, hot tub and room is first rate. Yes, the rooms are huge, clean, and included high end hotel appliances. The showers and bath tub oozed luxury.

The hotel is in a great location for tourist and business travellers, just a 5-10min walk from Parliament building. Parking is a bit pricey but street is free after 6pm and on Sunday. Internet charges are outrageous but this is expected from a 5 star hotel. Views are pretty good too but not overlooking the harbour as the hotel is located on a quieter side street.

Would definitely go back!

  • Liked — This hotel is the epitome of luxury, great location, great price if on sale
  • Disliked — Internet charges require a mortgage payment!

My partner and I booked a Premier Studio Room for a weekend back from Edinburgh on the Bolton website and found the pictures on the site very accurate. The room was fantastic, large bathroom, cooking facilities, huge bed and really nice new decor.
As former local residents we chose not to have the breakfast from the buffet as it is very expensive when there are a number of fantastic cafes within a short stroll for half the price.
The parade cafe which is on Oriental parade (30 min walk from the Bolton) may possibly be the best cafe on the planet and if anyone likes big breakfasts they can not be faulted for a casual fantastic brunch/lunch.
The only issue we had with the Bolton was the service was a little poor on check out and when we booked a taxi for 6 through the concierge to Boulcott St (about 1.5 kilometre away) it cost $25 which was not stated when booking. Should have cost about $5 on a bad day.

Bolton was a great hotel with helpful staff and clean modern rooms. No problems making a reservation via email, and complimentary upgrade to a suite was given when I mentioned it was a special occasion. Great rate, especially given the cricket was on (and the NZ cricket team was staying at the Bolton!) and the suite was fantastic. Compact suite but still everything we needed - bathroom was generous and fully self contained was a plus. And it was a welcome relief after a very late checkin. Walking distance to some great restaurants and the waterfront. Wellington is not that large so it is very tourist-friendly. We had a hire car and there was also no trouble parking it at the Bolton (carpark is very cool). We ate at the restaurant for dinner one evening, and while food was great, service was ordinary. And it was a little pricey (although most restaurants in NZ are a little dearer than we were used to - normally it is the wine), but great to be able to have a few drinks and then jump in the lift to get home. Breakfast was ordinary (and expensive) - plenty of cafes not far from the hotel which may have been a better option. All in all though our stay was great - excellent little boutique hotel close to everything but still out of the way so there is no traffic noise.

  • Liked — Suite was great - loved the bathrobes
  • Disliked — Annoying waiter at dinner (we were delivered menu folders three times, each time there were no menus in it. We were beginning to wonder whether he was playing a joke on us)

I loved it here! I moved here after staying in a dump for the first couple of nights of my holiday. I was upgraded to a better room even though I came in a day before my reservation! The room was lovely!! I had a very comfortable bed...with pick of 4 different types of pillows. A lovely view of the Botanical Gardens with my wall of windows. I also had a mini kitchen and a large bathroom. The front desk was very friendly and even recommended what wine tour I should take. They also have a nice restaurant (a little pricey) and free internet in the lounge. The only drawback is that there aren't many restaurants close so you have to walk about 10 mins to something good.

Bottomline: I would have excepted to pay much higher prices for such a great room.

The last time we stayed here two years ago, I was not very impressed with the staff, but this time, they were GREAT! They were really busy as the hotel was full at Easter, but all staff were friendly and helpful.

Because we had booked at the last minute, we did have to wait for quite a while to get to our studio room, but when we got there , it was clean, comfortable, and spacious. Our stay was very relaxed. I like the mostly white decor, as it always looks airy. The furnishings in the room add colour and a feeling of luxury.

The Bolton is very well situated, and we were able to walk to and from all the places we wanted to visit, including the waterfront, Botanic gardens, parliament , main shopping area etc.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I will definitely be staying there the next time I'm in Wellington.

  • Liked — spacious feeling of room
  • Disliked — getting woken by rowdy person next door at 5am
