Arrived as a single diner, early evening, and though the place was starting to get busy, attentive staff arranged a small table - very acceptable. Great range of beers, and VG wine list, so sampled an Emerson's Pilsener, and Roaring Meg Pinot Noir. Lovely.
Started with Breads, truffle butter and EVO - delicious, and just right to prepare for the Wakanui Grain Fed Scotch (Fillet I assume). This was served with Parsnip Remoulade, Smoked Onion and Jus, together with roasted potatoes and gravy on the side. The flavours on this were excellent - lovely combination of hot and cool temps, and sweet, smokey and sour in the combined textures. BUT - here's where it all fell to pieces - the steak had obviously been carved from a very nervous beast, and was uptight, tough, full of sinew, and very chewy as a result. I ploughed through it (good teeth), and when asked by the lovely waitress if I had enjoyed the meal, I voiced my dissapointment. She advised that I should have mentioned it to the staff and would have got a replacement. Fine - I don't doubt that, but the damage was already done - I do not like to go through the issue of returning a meal - it should have been perfect in the first place.
So - great atmosphere - buzzing, good service, great tastes, shame about the nervous beast.
