“Entertaining and informative”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2013

I joined the ultimate movie tour today. Having in mind that the locations would only mildly resemble those in the LOTR films, I was really positively surprised how Ted brought those locations to life by showing film scenes and pictures. I would highly recommend the tour to every LOTR fan and everyone interested in film making in general.

“Fun thing for LOTR fans to do in Wellington”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2013

Just to make sure everyone has the right expectations, please remember that the Lord of the Rings films were made more than 10 years ago, and there are no actual sets on the tours. Your guide will use a variety of movie clips and photos to explain where certain scenes were filmed.

The fun part is that there are props and costumes to help reenact some of the scenes for photos.

For the "Ultimate movie tour" option, it ends with a visit to the Weta Cave where many of the props and effects for the movies were created. I met a staff member there who was an extra in all three films and enjoyed hearing his stories about what happened during filming.

The mini tour of the Weta workshop is not included on this tour so you'll have to come back and do it separately. That was probably the only disappointment I had with this tour.

From what I understand, the Wellington Rover Tours, which offers a similar tour for a higher price, does not provide movie clips or props during the tour.

The Wellington Movie tour is a great way for Lord of the Rings fans to spend a day reliving some of the moments from the movie, and to see different parts of Wellington

“Fantastic tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

This is for the die hard fans of LOTR only - the sets are gone so all you're looking at is trees and fields - but the experience is enhanced ten times by the great guides who play clips of the films and show you pictures from the sets and films, so you know what you're looking at. Standing in the same place that Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee walked through felt very awesome indeed.
The guides are very knowledgeable and provide some great insight into the making of the films. I'm a huge LOTR fan and I found out tons of stuff I hadn't known before. The trip to the Weta Cave is especially good because you go after hours when nobody else is there. At $115 for an eight hour tour it's an absolute steal, and one of the best things I've done on my two month trip here. Bravo!

“Great for LOTR fans, but not for those looking for nature scenery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2013

Enjoy the movies, but not a fanatic. Thought the scenery of the movie was amazing so went on the tour hoping to combine the movies with natural beauty. That is not what I got - so much computer work goes into the movies that the locations are pretty standard. With that said, the tour was excellent. Very knowledgeable tour guide Ted. Very friendly. I enjoyed the combination of photos and video clips from the movie to better appreciate the locations. Very professional. Highly recommend for the LOTR fan!

“Good LOTR tour, but could be better”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2013

I enjoyed my time with Alice, and she's a great tour guide. Very knowledge about the movies, and knows a lot of details. I also really liked that they have a TV in the van, and play scenes from her iPhone that relate to the locations we went to. Much better than hearing a guide just talk about a scene. They also have movie props and enlarged still photos of the scenes, so you can better picture them when on-site. The props are a little cheesy, but get the point across.

However, the tour was not without its warts. First, it was raining for most of our tour. Rain is certainly to be expected, but none of us has umbrellas (day started out clear and sunny) and they didn't have enough umbrellas for everyone (small group of 9). So some got pretty wet standing out in the rain. Second, lunch was just a subway sandwich and cookie. The shelters they normally stop at were in use, so we had to pull up under a treet (in the rain) and try to eat outside. That didn't work well, so we went back into the van to eat. So logistically, they did a poor job of planning for rain and accomodating us in a suitable manner.

Of course LOTR was filmed over 10 years ago, so there's no remaining sets. What you will be seeing are trees, rivers, or hills where scenes were shot. Unlike the Edoras LOTR tour on the south island (where you stand on Mt. Sunday which is pretty awe inspiring), none of the Wellington sites are awe inspiring. You get to see a tree trunk that was in the movie, or where Riverdell was, etc. So expect to be a little underwhelmed at the sites, but you will be quite impressed with how Weta and Peter Jackson turned those sites into amazing movie scenes.

Overall I did learn a lot about how the movie was made, and it was cool to stand in the same places as some famous movie scenes. But the reality of the sites is far less impressive than the final scenes in the movie. So for die hard fans, sure, take the tour.

If they could be much better prepared for rain, and upgrade the lunch a notch or two, then it would be a much better experience.
