“Value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2014

Asian food/cafes are generally the cheaper options in WLGTN. KC Cafe (Chinese food) will not disappoint you, food is tasty not too salty. For the price and large servings, it gives you value for your money. Most of the times I'd take away my leftover - that's an extra meal at home (or instant packed lunch at the office the next day). They are open til late, great option after a primetime movie if you haven't had the chance to grab dinner before the show. Or if you need to fill up after some drinks at the pubs. I haven't eaten here other than dinner/supper.

For a newbie, it will take you time to go through the long menu! this can get overwhelming. Upside of this is you can try new dishes on your next visit.

Don't expect much customer service and sweet smiles from the lady boss who takes your order and gives orders to the cooks. But she runs the place well even when packed. Serving sizes can be shared by two skinny folks which means you'll need extra plates, chopsticks or cutlery -- ask for all that you need at one go, or risk being leered at. (she's busy!)

They have service water from the tap, which you can help yourself to. If you're not sure about it, order a soda or hot tea.

“Warning: You may not get what you've ordered”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

Don't know about food being cheap - thought they are just priced the same as everywhere else. Don't know about food being tasty - because none turned out to be what we had ordered. We have been there a few times, we only go there when it is quiet, usually first thing when it opens around 11-ish. But for some reason every time the chef's mind was miles away and simply couldn't remember what the lady owner told him about customers'orders. We have had lamb in curry sauce without the curry, fried rice noodle in black bean sauce without the sauce, and these happened when we were the only people ordering! Surprisingly the chef would still argue that he was right. Good luck to those who are going in a group or in a busy time.

“It's good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 10, 2014

KC Cafe is awesome. Food is cheap and delicious. You can generally tell if somewhere is good Chinese food if there are lots of Chinese people eating there. There always are.

Lady at the counter is notoriously unfriendly, but she's damned efficient. You order your food, she screams your order at the cooks at your food is ready in no time.

Decor is pretty basic, but for a cheap good meal in Wellington, definitely should visit.

“A quick Chinese meal of high quality at a reasonable price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

I quite often go [twice per month on average] for a quick meal at KC Cafe. The food is of excellent value, is authentic and of a high standard. The setting is basic and not one for a romantic night out but it's fine for couples or a group of up to 6 [because of table settings in a limited space] who are out for a good quick meal. The only drawback for me is that there is one particlar woman who is very abrubt and never has a pleasant demeanour. In fact, when they do catch your eye, the chefs tend to smile more than the waiting staff. Having said that, it's still worth a visit if good Chinese food is all you are after.

“Reminds me of a traditional Hong Kong Style Cafe and with the staff to back that ambience up!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2013

When I first went in, I thought I was in Hong Kong. With the lady at the counter screaming orders at the cooks and almost screaming at you only because the kitchen's loud and she can't hear herself speak.

Went in looking for a table of 5 at midday, there weren't any seats so we decided to go some place else. Lady at the counter was extremely sharp and she ran out and dragged us back into the restaurant (exaggerated) :D, but she did stopped us from leaving and told us that she can get us a table within 5 mins and to place our orders in the meantime.

What they did wasn't a bad thing, it's just cultural differences, which I'm used to because I've got relatives in HK and I travel there quite often.

We had Dumpling Soup, Spicy Beef Tripe, Braised Beef Tendons and Braised Beef Brisket. All served with Rice. They were ALL good! Meltingly tender, and the rich sauce goes extremely well with the plain white rice!

That's comfort food served in an atmosphere that reminded me of where my family's from!

Just stay away from the Mee Goreng.
