“Very popular this year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2013

My walking route - Days Bay Homestay to the village, a different experience almost every day. The sand and gravel on this beach alternate with different winds & tides, providing very big changes in both environment and surface. It is sometimes sandy enough to use my Blokart or walk in bare feet, othertimes a bit stony. High tide or stoney is the time to walk on the dunes located behind the beach protected by the dunes from wind, but drenched in sun. It is very hard to think I am within 20 minutes of the city and no more than 500 meters from home by the time I reach the wharf. My favourite walk - just to get the groceries - tough but necessary.
2013 summer has seen very large crowds on Eastbourne beach, with parking at a premium and queues of cars for up to 2 km when it comes time to go home.
This beach is safe and easy, although sometimes a bit cool for swimming. Excellent snorkelling at the north end rocky point.

“Good views of Wellington”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2013

Not a sandy or otherwise attractive beach, generally on the cold side for swimming, but offers good views of Wellington and shipping into or out of the harbour

“Take a picnic and enjoy the beach and the grassy, shade park”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

We sometimes take the ferry across the harbour or drive to Eastbourne for some time out. There are good eateries and a deli for yummy picnic supplies. The walk along the coast road on the harbour's edge towards Pencarrow Lighthouse is spectacular if you want some exercise and great photos. No cars permitted, just cyclists and pedestrians, so the walking is good.

“So?”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

If you live in this part of Wellington it might seem great, but basically it's just another shale beach.

“Nice but nothing special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013 via mobile

Eastbourne is a pleasant coastal Lower Hutt suburb. That's about it. If you want cafés, there are better ones in Wellington and if you want beaches, go to Golden Bay.
