Let me preface this review by saying that I basically lived at the Intercontinental last year, for work. Work paid for my stay, which was two weeks out of each month, for a total of nine months. During that time, I stayed in a variety of rooms on every single floor. I am very well acquainted with the hotel, its rooms and its amenities! The hotel cannot be faulted for its location; smack between the main street and the sparkling wharf. It is very quiet, and the beds were very plush indeed with big pillows and duvet (only criticism; polyester sheets at a 5 star hotel??). The bathrooms are a bit small however they are perfectly serviceable. The water- saving shower heads are a nuisance, I admit. However the rooms are clean, the staff are unfailingly polite and obliging with lovely Kiwi humour and friendliness. The concierge is a member of the Golden Keys.
The gym is small, there are only two treadmills, a couple of bikes, one of those stairmaster things, some weights etc. Very basic. The pool is also small, but if you go at nighttime, the lighting gives it a lovely relaxing ambience and is actually one of my favourite hotel pools. There is also a small jacuzzi and a sauna.
Apparently the rooms on the 7th floor are "premium" rooms.... as far as I'm concerned, there's nothing premium about them. The view out of the Intercontinental is not very spectacular, it's mostly office buildings. I wouldn't pay extra for a room on the 7th floor. The decor is largely a bit old and tired.... I'd say this hotel is definitely in need of a facelift! It definitely looks a little sad. Club rooms on the other hand are much, much nicer (and have wall-mounted plasmas) but I'm still not sure they justify the exorbitant price tag.
At the end of the day, I haven't much experience with other Wellington hotels however as far as 5- star hotels go, the Intercon lacks decor and charm but makes up for it in location and service. It is difficult for me to gauge value as I was not paying. If I were a tourist, I'm not altogether sure I'd fork out the exorbitant rack rate.... but perhaps if you can get a good internet rate, it would be a worthwhile stay.
