“Great food in a new location ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2014

Little Penang is one of our favourite eateries. And now even more people can enjoy this great place as it's moved next door to a bigger restaurant. The food is always tasty, well presented and not expensive (by Kiwi standards). Highly recommended!

“good little spot right on Dixon Street”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2014

This has changed venue over the years but remains a firm favourite for it's cheap and tasty food with many locals.

“Over-rated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 15, 2014 via mobile

I'm a huge fan of Wellington's food culture and if I'm not impressed with a place, I usually vote with my feet. But I can't let the rave reviews of this place go unanswered.

I lived in Malaysia and this take-away is bland, pricey for what it is and not terribly authentic.

The Long Bar in Brandon Street is a better bet (although still nothing like eating in Penang).

“Great food and service!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2014

We just walked by and because it was Monday and very crowded, we thought it would be a popular restaurant. The food (curry and nasi) were good. And the waiters are very friendly. A dish costs between 9 and 15 dollars.

“yummy food, great service”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

This is located in the heart of the CBD, nearer the funky part of town.

The atmosphere was great. there was a nice buzz, but the noise was not too loud to have good dinner conversation.

the waitstaff were informative, attentive and quick.

We had a platter as a starter (I can't remember what was on it), but it was a hit. everything was tasty, well seasoned and just the right amount.

We had a nasi lemak and hokkien char as our mains. the rice in the nasi lemak was not as coconutty as i'd like, but the flavours of the sambal and curry was spot on. especially the sambal, it is hard to get good sambal in this town. The hokkien char was the most authentic i've had in Wellington. i could smell the "wok hei" (breathe of the wok) in the noodles! it was great.

we took home some desserts, which were also really good.

I like that they do a daily special. In Asia, most street food sellers are family businesses that specialise in one or two dishes only. this is why they are so good at them. this is a great way to simulate that experience. I wonder if Little Penang have adopted this smaller menu to unclutter the menu with lots of stuff all the time, do a small selection, which may mean that the ingredients will be fresher.

Anyway, we will be back to sampe the rest of the specials.
