On a recent trip to the South Island I had the opportunity to stay at the Halswell Lodge in Wellington. It is located about five minutes from the InterIsland Ferry terminal in downtown Wellington. I stayed with another traveller in a two bedroom suite. As is the case with many Kiwi Motels the main bedroom offered a king size bed and the second bedroom offered two single child sized beds. I lost the draw and got the single bed. All in all it was a good stay in a very convenient location in downtown Wellington. The owner Greg and the front desk staff Sue, we're very easy to deal with and personable. On the down side was quite a number of stairs to reach the room from the street if stairs are a problem. Excellent Internet access is available but the cost is quite high ... $6.00 for 50 megabytes or 12 hours and the management software for Internet access is very poor. Once connected the Internet will allow international voice only Skype calls. When your 50 mb is done you 're locked out until reception tops up your account for another $6.00. Not very handy if it is the middle of the night. The problem lies with their Internet supplier, Viola, and not the lodge but the problem is very frustrating if you are relying on the Internet connection. Poor Internet access is a common problem in motels in NZ and the Halswell is currently no exception to this rule. If Internet access is important to you hunt for an establishment that offers Zenbu access. Zenbu is currently the gold standard Internet access system in NZ.
