“good value, good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012

first off -- the capital view motor inn is not a five star hotel. it is, however, comfortable, convenient, and affordable.

we stayed here for 2 nights. it was starting to get difficult to find affordable places to stay with the upcoming hobbit movie premiere, and we were lucky to find this motel. check-in went well and mark is very friendly and informative. the motel has free parking which was much appreciated - definitely get one of the spots behind the building as opposed to in front. the room was spacious -- we had asked for a queen sized bed in the room but the room actually had a queen bed and a twin bed also. there was a kitchenette that was extremely helpful, especially due to the electric burners. we saved some money by getting groceries from a nearby store and cooking dinner one night.

the motel is super close to cuba street but overall it was quiet. cuba street is a great destination for restaurants (both cheap and more spendy), bars, clothing stores. it was not too far to walk to the i-site in the civic centre or the te papa museum. i would recommend a walk along oriental parade -quite lovely.

wifi was free for the first 50 mb but the connection was not so great. walls were thin also -- we never heard our neighbors (only 4 units per floor) but when we went out into the hall to try to get better wifi signal, we could easily hear our television. i don't think this should be a problem as again, once inside your room, it is quiet and peaceful.

We arrived and found the Capital View Motor Inn easily having caught the bus from the airport to Wellington city ($9 each) we hopped off at Cuba Mall walking up the mall (away from the sea) until we came to took a right turn at the end T intersection Webb Street and the next left into Thompson Street complex is on the corner.
Friendly check in with Mark who was very welcoming and informative. Nothing seemed a problem and he was very genuine.
The complex is older and nothing fancy to look at, maybe built in the 1960's era. The rooms are spacious with bonus of little kitchenette. So is a good option for a family. Toilet and bathroom were upgraded and quite sufficient, the little extras like shampoo and conditioner and little wipes for getting makeup off was appreciated. Towels were soft and absorbent. Their was a TV in the room. We looked down on the street below so the view was okay looking out over neighbouring houses.
The price is very reasonable for staying in Wellington city and the staff were friendly and helpful. Security seems good, they lock the doors at night so you can only re-enter with your key taking stairs up to the first level then the lift from there. If you don't find it easy using a staircase albeit not a very long walk up to the first floor then I would ask if they have anything available on the ground floor.
Lift is quite small and cramped with 3 people and a couple of suitcases.
Nearby Cuba Street is a gem of little boutique shops where you could easily spend a lovely day just wandering in and out of and enjoying the lovely cafes and food available. An easy walk further into town or catch the bus from the bottom of Cuba Mall to anywhere you want to go. Handy to Te Papa too if you don't mind walking. Close to the Massey University Campus, Toi Whakaari (NZ Drama School), Te Whaea (NZ Dance School).
So if you are looking at budget accommodation and want somewhere adequate I would recommend this as a good option.
We enjoyed a lovely dinner at the quirky little restaurant down in Cuba Street almost on the corner of Arthur Street aptly named "Arthurs" we returned the next morning for a delicious breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view if staying a few days not near the lift.

Rooms have been renovated and come with brand new kitchens and bathrooms. They are large and comfortable. Great shower pressure, flat screen tv and perfect for those who like to self cater. Very good for families also. Cuba street restaurants ate 5 mins down the road and it's an easy walk to the waterfront, cable car and Te Papa museum. Would stay again!

We enjoyed two nights at Capital View during our holiday in NZ. We had a very clean and comfortable room with fantastic views. We were able to prepare our own meals and the bathroom was new. Mark greeted us in reception, offered helpful advice and was very obliging. It was also good to have offstreet parking and to be able to easily walk to Cuba Street ,Wellington Central and the Botanic Gardens. We found Capital View Motor Inn to be very good value and if visiting Wellington we would stay again.

We had requested one of the rooms on the higher floors and were not disappointed. The room had a great view and was well equiped. Many rooms claim to be self catering ready but are not. In case is was as advertised with everything needed.

At check-in we recieved a very friendly welcome and lots of information on what was in the area and some suggestions on where to visit.

Would we stay here again...definitely yes.

Any negatives...one minor one was that as we were leaving before the office open we had to carry our bags down 1 floor to get to the exit. But how to do this was explained in great detail when we arrived so it would really only be negative if you had issues carrying bags down 1 floor.

Room Tip: Ask for the higher floor rooms that still have the elevator connecting them

Our rooms were perfect, recently updated, clean and tidy, so close to town, comfortable and spacious, plenty of parking along with the great views. On arrival we were met by Mark late in the evening as we traveled to Wellington after work with four year old twins, he helped us settle in, the motel was easy to find. If fact our extended family stayed that weekend and added an extra night as we had a wonderful stay, great hospitality and relaxed environment. Exceptional value for money. Thank you for such an amazing stay. We will be back soon

Room Tip: I had booked a variety of rooms for our family, we took our parents and sibling with their children...
