“Great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2012

The YHA is about five minutes' walk from the beach in one direction, and five minutes' walk from the city centre in the other. The downside is that it can be a bit noisy, especially if you have a room by the road. Despite that I had a great stay: my room was clean, the hostel facilities were excellent and the reception staff really helpful.

Room Tip: Avoid the road side if you have problem with traffic noise

My partner and myself stayed at the YHA for 3 nights and loved it! There are 2 great kitchens, large lounge/dining area's on the ground floor and also on the second floor in the internet/phone room. More importantly there is FREE WIFI in the hostel as with 21 other YHA's now but this was the first time we had stayed in a Yha with free wifi. The rooms are a good size and beds comfortable, rooms cleaned daily and regularly checked by staff. The staff are great, helpful and friendly and the reception is open early and late hours. Good laundry facilities with lounges on this level with great views. Great view from 6th floor rooms and 2 lifts. The hostel is in an excellent location, close to the Te Papa, waterfront, Cuba/Courtney Place shopping precincts, well everything really! There is a New World opposite the hostel also which is very handy! The only problem is no parking available but it in the centre of the city and free by the harbour at the weekends and then the staff advised of the best/cheapest parking. I would definitely recommend this hostel for you're Wellington stay and we would definitely go back.

Stayed here many times and love the place. It is a hostel so don't expect hotel-style service and facilities. Only problem is that if you have a car or camper there is no on-site parking and street parking can only be used overnight and this is risky. Can be noisy with guests. Located at a very busy intersection traffic noise could have been a problem but not for us.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on upper levels to avoid noise

Exactly what you'd expect from a typical hostel - dorm bathrooms, small shared bedrooms, a little bit noisy, but completely decent and in a central area (though not right in the heart of the action). I would stay there again, but it's nothing to write home about.

Stayed here with 2 friends and decided to pay for a 4 bedded room (2x bunkbeds) for extra privacy. Price very reasonable and had an ensuite room on the top floor. Bathroom could have been cleaner but then this is a hostel and not a lavish hotel! Room was a good size with plenty of space for sorting out luggage and repacking bags!

Hostel is well situated and easily located once getting off the bus from the airport. Supermarket was directly opposite the hostel. As with any YHA, the staff are always incredibly well informed and helpful when it came to planning our activities for the day. The common areas were large and the sofas incredibly comfortable. There was a good size kitchen which was well equipped. The hostel was quiet at night which was surprising considering it was a weekend! Decent nights sleep was had by all. There were luggage facilities available once we had checked out, but you do need to pay for these.

Would stay again if my travels took me back to Wellington.

This is without doubt the worst YHA/HI hostel I have had the misfortune to stay in.

First of all, upon my arrival the staff stated that I had overpaid as the hostel does a 5/10 night special discounted offer. However, following this they explained it was 'tough' as I had already paid in full online. - I note that on the yha website there is no mention of such an offer ( quite sneaky!)

Upon request of a refund for x amount of nights I was told by a very rude member of staff, 'no,' who then explained to me that it wouldn't be 'fair' to refund me. Great customer service!!

Her attitude infuriated me so much I took it upon myself to formally complain to YHA themselves. I am also looking at other options to recover my funds from my debit card company, as there is no mention of a 'no refund policy'' on the yha website.

Apart from my experiences with bad staff, other negatives to point out would include rooms being dirty, the hostel full of 14 year olds on school trips and havng your food stolen from the fridge on numerous occasions. I assume this was from fellow guests but wouldn't rule out the possibility of it being a result of jobs-worth staff.

Positives: great location and probably cleaner than other hostels in wellington which I have heard bad stories about.

All in all.... Try and avoid yha Wellington!

Pretty modern and sparkling clean facilities. Big kitchen and dining area. YHA staff was helpful as always. Very centrally located - across the street from the supermarket and major bus stop, 5 minutes walk from Te Papa museum, 10 from the hip Cuba Street district, and 20 from the Parliament district. Worth shelling out the extra $6 compared to other hostels.
