I have stayed at this hotel several times over the 15 years I have been in Wellington. Although named Duxton on here it has recently been bought by the Amora chain of hotels. Duxton have moved out of the area because there is going to be an apartment development right in front of the hotel in the future which will remove its views from the top floors.

I like the hotel primarily because of its public areas, the restaurant and its proximity to the nightlife and shows. We often stay there because bed and breakfast and the Dine and Dash / Express menu is good value both in terms of price and flavour/presentation.

The rooms are getting to look a tad tired now and the once plush marble bathrooms now look rather sad. I like to think of it as the old Duchesse of Wellington!!

There are more modern hotels in Wellington but few offer large hotel comforts so convenient to the restaurants and nightlife. The Intercontinental and Bolton are further away. The Duxton is a place that "posh" tours stop at. It isn't really the motel that some have described it as on here. Motels are much worse than this in New Zealand - trust me!

I agree with the comments of others on here that the hotel does suffer from noise. We were awakened by the sound of police sirens as the police hassle the boy racers that cruise the streets on a weekend night. The boy racers make little noise really. So we would recommend that if you can bear to be without a view get a rear room away from the street noise.

There is little difference in the quality of the standard and club rooms (we've stayed in both). The only advantage to a club room is the club breakfast room which isn't really worth the additional expenditure to be honest.

This place has got to be the biggest pretender hotel I have ever been in. I thought this would be a nice place to stay and the price certainly suggested it would be..
First the room was incredibly tired, the bathroom smelt like it had not been cleaned in weeks the carpet was threadbare, the tv is small, old and did not work correctly, the sheets seemed dirty and it was noisy (no double glazing on the windows but on a busy street)

Next the food was really poor quality, the breakfast buffet was a joke and at $30 ridiculously priced.. In fact I almost laughed out loud when I say that coffee and toast with Jam was nearly $20.. To top it off the staff were rude, absent and slack

Overall I rate it no higher than a motel... I would not recommend it to anyone

My second annual work trip here, and only because it has good conference rooms. This time my bosses boss stayed here and he recommended we stay somewhere else next year. Maybe they stick the work travellers in the crummy rooms? Upon entering the room, I was greeted with a cheap smelling fragrance that was attempting to mask someones mishap.

Adding to my 2008 review, room# 518 has dark stains on the carpet and a cracked wall at the base of bathroom door frame - you can see into the dark cavity where god knows what is hiding in there. Cracked bathroom tiles and cheap soap complete the experience.

Last year when I checked out, the reception said they were looking at renovating in April 2009 - maybe levels 4-6 havent been completed yet?

I have stayed in better motels than this dump.

I stayed with my partner 6 days in September at the Duxton while I accompanied him on a business trip. Our room was on the 5th floor, so we had a lovely view across the bay towards the Hutt Valley and the mountains behind. The hotel is just around the corner of work, so it is very convenient for him to be so close and for me it was good as it is central to everything. This was about all I can say about the good part.
The room looked old and really shabby. The furniture are totally warn out and look so sad and tired. The bed felt too soft and warn out. The TV is one of the old fashioned small boxes - a relict from the 70ties I guess. It was so tucked away in a side cupboard that we could hardly watch from the bed. The selection of channels is very poor not even CNN or any international news channel apart from Sky news.
The bathroom had a separate shower, but on the first morning I discovered a chewing gum there, left kindly from the previous occupant and the cleaning staff!!! I raised this at the service desk, but they hardly even apologised for that. The ceiling in the bathroom seemed to slowly disintegrate itself. There were some attempts to kind of sticky tape the paint back up?!
The walls of the rooms are very thin; this gives you an unwanted opportunity to share the ups and downs of the relationships of the couples in the rooms next by.
We didn't eat in the hotel as there are so many good restaurants and cafes close by and previous reviews weren't actually raving about the food at the Duxton either.
I hope I can convince my partner that we will go next time to the holiday inn, where I stayed one more day after we left the Duxton. It is much nicer, but not as central. At least it has a pool.

This hotel is faded and tired and is overdue for refurbishment. We had no issue with either the staff or the cleanliness of the hotel. However, the common areas and rooms are scruffy and the carpets are stained. The corridor to our room also smelt of smoke. When we opened the door to our room we were greeted by a rotting skirting board in the entrance corridor (presumably caused by a leaking or once leaking shower) and the room smelt stale. The room furnishings were bland and dated. The TV appeared to be on its last legs - it crackled and made a loud clunk when the channel was changed. There was no wine in the mini bar. We would be unlikely to return to the Duxton again unless it was upgraded. The location was good, but the hotel was overpriced for the standard of facilities.
