Recently spent a couple of nights here. When we checked in (impressive lobby area) the receptionists were very friendly and helpful. However, for some reason our two credit cards would not 'take' when the hotel asked for them in case we charged to the room. We'd only used them hours before too. However, an 'emergency' card was accepted. We dumped our luggage and took the rental car back to Hertz which was only a short distance away. We had been allocated a 2nd floor room but we said we'd like to be higher if possible so as to get a good harbour view. The receptionist obliged and said we'd be on the 8th floor and our luggage would be in the room waiting. Good service !
Walking back from the Hertz station, it became very apparent that area to the south east of the hotel was not quite as solubrious as one would have hoped for. It felt quite run down and was full of second hand and thrift stores. However, we later discovered that the area to the north and east were much better as one went towards the city centre proper. We were very close to Cuba Street and Cuba Mall which appears to have a reputation in guide books as a must visit, lively, trendy place for shops, restaurants and bars. Think this is a bit misleading. It is a squalid, seedy street.
When we got back to the hotel there was a little hiatus with getting to the room. There was a new receptionist on duty who had no idea what was happening and we explain at length we'd already checked in and were going to be on the 8th floor etc etc. It was eventually settled.
We did have a magnificient view from a well furnished and very spacious room, with a huge king XL bed. The room was set up for wheelchair access which might explain. The bathroom was massive too as one for wheelchair use would be. We assumed they were not expecting wheelchair guests during our stay, or had other rooms available if needed. The bathroom did need refurbishing though - tired 1980's decor with marble tiles and faded 'gold effect' taps and fittings. The room had obviously been recently refurbished very nicely, so why not the bathroom. Being on the 8th floor with the wind whipping round, it was quite alarming to see the large plate glass window flex !
Breakfast was okay but the maitre'd thought we were paying for breakfast despite it being in our room rate and would not have it any other way. He got a little shirty ! It was busy and noisey and the staff seemed reluctant to let us go to a quieter end of the restaurant despite the tables being set. We just went there as some guests were seated there and several other people who followed us.
We had dinner in the hotel one evening too as it was cold and wet outside. It was very nice. The restaurant had been transformed with table clothes and nice glasswear and china. It looked like a different place. Different staff were on duty and they were charming and efficient and professional. We had a nice meal in a convivial atmosphere.
We were catching a very early inter-islander ferry the next morning and so did not have breakfast again. Check out was quick and efficicent and there were taxis waiting outside the hotel even at this early hour.
We also availed ourselves of the complimentary guest laundry in the hotel which worked very well and was so useful. What else was there to do on a damp, cool, grey, windy late afternoon in Wellington when everything was shut !
