“Great location, great big room”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2010

Stayed here for 2 nights on a business trip, i got a free upgrade into the apartment side of the building so the room was huge. The room was very modern and the bath/spa was fantastic. A colleague though stayed in the hotel side and said it is not quite as nice as the apartments, so seems like it is worth the upgrade.

I only had one short stay here following a few days work, however every interaction I had with various staff were friendly, efficent and helpful - even when i needed to change rooms at 11.30pm due to a noisy pipe located nearby - that was no problem and staff were quick to respond and took the inititative.
Bus to airport time tables, weather were checked when asked and even a cup of tea made when the machine had run out of water - nothing seemed a problem

And of course - its just beautiful in the lobby! all that amazing art!

Stayed here on my arrival into Wellington after 2 days travelling from the Uk. No sleep for 36 hours, i was so glad to get to this hotel.

Mini bar and proper coffee maker in the room was a nice touch and overall the room was a good size. Bathroom had a seperate shower and bath.
Location is right in the middle of everything and staff were more than helpful with any problems.

I had booked for two night but it turned out we could only stay one due to time restrictions, but looking back im sorry i didnt spend the second night because we stayed in some awful places after this!!

Stayed here just one night for our southward bound journey on the ferry. Stayed in a suite. Fantastic accomodation with helpful staff. Great bedroom area, big comfy bed with a pillow menu, walk in shower and spa bath and kitchen. City hotel so has no great views from the windows.

Location is really good for the ferry ( 10 mins ). We walked into the centre and found a great Italian restaurant for the evening.

I adore this hotel.

Right from entering, your senses are triggered by the amazing amount of original artwork - much of it very quirky. the deçor is gorgeous - chandeliers, plush seating, a coffee machine, lots to look at.

Heading to the rooms was also a pleasure - the walls downstairs are swathed in shimmering curtains and everywhere you look there is something to look at - from sculptures to art on the walls, mirrors on the ceiling and much more.

The corridors upstairs are just as lavish - almost the feel of an old cruise liner. Lots of plush materials and mirrors.

We enjoyed our rooms - my parents in a Harbour View room with balcony - a large room with plenty of seating, a huge TV, huge balcony and stunning views across the harbour and Te Papa - I know that some of the other rooms on this side of the hotel are a little tired and they are currently being upgraded.

Our side of the hotel was the Residence Side where we had a twin studio and a one bedroom apartment inter-connecting. Wonderful amenities right down to comfy robes, a kitchenette, fantastic coffee machine, washing machine, flat screen TV's, spa bath, pillow menu, amazingly comfortable bed.

Also liked the little touches in the 'mini bar' area of toothbrush, panadol and much more should you have forgotten anything.

What also amazed me was how quiet the room was given we were in the city.

Staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Breakfast in the room was great. $30 per person for a full breakfast and you could choose from a good selection (I had Egg Florentine which was splendid).

All in all, a wonderful experience - a stay that really makes you feel as if you have had a stay rather than just a night away. Nothing sterile or boring about this place.

Would most definitely recommend and will most definitely be back!

After reading reviews on this site I was apprehensive. But I have to say that the condition of the hotel room was fantastic. It was very clean, the bathroom was great and everything was in working order. View of Te Papa and the harbour was wonderful, and the bed was very comfortable.
However, the staff were very rude and unfriendly. I have never encountered such bad service in all my travels, (and there were a few encounters in NYC). I wish that I could say I would stay again but in this case first impressions last. After checking in my good mood was almost entirely ruined. Despite the fact that the room was almost flawless and the location is stunning, I would not recommend this hotel to friends or family. Very disappointing.

The Museum was a typical city centre hotel. Our room was well positioned on the 4th floor with a balcony overlooking the harbour and the Museum of New Zealand – Te Papa Tongarewa. The room was comfortable but the bathroom was beginning to look tired.

Parking was a problem and we were glad we paid the extra $20 per day to use the hotel car park. Our car was efficiently valet-parked when we arrived and returned as requested for our early morning ferry crossing.

The package we had did not include breakfast but we tried it one day and at $22 each it was quite poor with cooked breakfast even extra.

We looked forward to a meal in the hotel’s Hippopotamus (sic) restaurant and were very disappointed. We received an amuse bouche and a sorbet during the 45 minutes it took for the starter to arrive. Some people appeared to have waited even longer. This was our most expensive meal in our 6-week tour of New Zealand and the most disappointing we wouldn’t eat there again.

Internet access is complementary.

Overall, with the staff being friendly an efficient, and the convenience of the location, there were more upsides than downsides.

We would stay at the hotel again but not eat in the Hippopotamus restaurant.
