“Nice Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

Reasonably hand location on Oriental Parade. Close to Courtney Place and Te Papa but probably a bit far to walk to Lambton Quay.therw

We had a hire car and it was quite convenient having public (pay and display) carparking over the road rather than paying the hotel charges for their car park.

We got a two bed hotel room being two double beds which made the rate quite reasonable otherwise it could get a bit pricey.

We got the buffet breakfast which was alright - quite a good range of cooked items and cereals and convenient I suppose.

Overall the rooms were pretty tidy and clean and you get a nice view of the harbour.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors will give a better view and be quieter.

For easy walking to the waterfront, Oriental Bay, Te Papa, Courtney Place etc this hotel would be hard to beat. If you need the "business" end of town there is a bus stop right at the door.
The hotel itself was clean, comfortable and has friendly, helpful staff. We requested a room with a view and had a fantastic view over the city and harbour. I loved the concept of the 7th floor area- which has the bar, restaurant and a lounge area, this would be a great hotel for groups!
The breakfast had moments of greatness and moments of flashbacks to awful school food - and we had a room next to the elevator so could hear the noise from that for a while.
Nothing that would stop me recommending this as a great place to stay in Wellington tho!

Room Tip: Ask for a view when you book- waking up to the harbour is pretty special.

Great service, everyone was very helpful. Room was excellent with beautiful harbour view. We also organized a brunch for 30 people in the hotel, and I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating and helpful staff were in organizing fantastic food at the prices and time we wanted.
Overall we were very happy with our stay.

Stayed at the Copthorne in late December 2012. The hotel was great for everything except one thing. We had a room on the 10th floor with a fantastic view overlooking the Wellington harbour and the city. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and well sized. The location of the hotel is convenient as it is a short walk, along the waterfront, to the bustling downtown. I booked the hotel over the internet and the room rate was very reasonable given the location and the quality of the hotel. The only disappointment was the breakfast. When we arrived we were told we were entitled to a $50 voucher. We used the voucher on breakfast. We had a choice between a hot breakfast and a cold breakfast. Well the hot breakfast featured a white slosh which I took to be scrambled eggs and would need "Dirty Jobs" star Mike Rowe to clean the tray, and lots of artery clogging sausage and bacon which had seen better days. Cold breakfast seemed to be a few cold cereals. The toast was ok though. After the toast we went to the cafe next door and had a delicious breakfast.

The minute I walked into my room I said 'wow'. I had booked a bay view room which was not only HUGE and very nicely decorated but also had the most amazing view from the private balcony overlooking the bay.

The hotel location is also very convenient for exploring the city, a walk along the water front or for hiking up Mt Victoria - all of which I did in the 24 hours I was there.

Room service was tasty and not too expensive - the only thing that could be improved is the WIFI - you only get 20 minutes free and you have to sit in the lobby to get it - not ideal!

Room Tip: Choose a bay room - the views are so worth it!

My rating of 'very good' reflects the fact that FOR THE REGULAR PRICE OF THE ROOM in the GIVEN CITY, this hotel exceeded expectations in a number of areas. In other words, I'm taking into account the fact that higher-cost hotel rooms usually come with higher expectations. In my view a 'good' room is one that meets expectations for the given situation; a 'very good' room is one that meets and exceeds expectations; and an 'excellent' room is one that greatly exceeds expectations. My rating of 'very good' reflects my view that the Copthorne met and, at times, exceeded my high expectations of a room in the price range typical for this hotel.

As expected of a higher-end hotel, the rooms have modern, spacious, and very comfortable furnishings with a very high standard of cleanliness and attentiveness to detail. The sheets and towels are excellent quality. The space is very functional for a short or longer-term stay. It is suitable for business as well as vacation travelers. There are places to place your luggage, comfortable bedding, excellent lighting, spacious bathroom and shower facilities, etc.

The hotel exceeded our high expectations in a number of areas:

1) The location of the hotel is outstanding, right on the waterfront of Oriental Bay and convenient to the inter-islander ferry terminal for crossings to/from the south island. Many of the rooms have a view over the bay. There is a walking path that runs along the bay, which is easily accessed from the hotel. All shops and amenities, plus a number of key attractions (e.g., the museum) are also within easy walking distance. We didn't require transportation while we stayed at the Copthorne; we parked our car in the hotel lot and left it there (note: parking is extra).

2) The staff were - without exception - extremely attentive, professional, helpful, and pleasant. As a case in point, we had a problem with the fridge in our room; within 10 minutes of calling to report the difficulty to the front desk, they'd replaced the appliance.

3) The breakfast buffet included with our room package was simply outstanding with a wide selection of hot and cold items, all of excellent quality and displayed in a very appealing way.

4) The bar and restaurant serve excellent quality food from a varied menu that reflects its higher-end standards but that does not gouge.

On the down-side, we were a bit disappointed by the pool facility and were hoping that it would be a lap pool instead of a 'play pool'. But this is a minor quibble that does not affect my evaluation of the hotel as a whole.

We stayed at the Copthorne because of the availability of a great GrabOne deal for a room, breakfast, and late check-out. It was our first time staying at the Copthorne and we were delighted by our experience and will stay again.

For a traveler seeking higher-end accommodations in a great location, we recommend the Copthorne without hesitation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the bay, if available.
