“Sensational Weekday Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

I work very close to the Thistle but hadn't been there for years, that is all about to change!
Went to lunch today and within an hour we had beautiful fresh Bruchetta to start, Scallops and Black Pudding and flavorful Paua fritters for entree and Venison salad and Whitebait fritter for main. Oh and two delish Bloody Mary's!
The food was perfectly timed and well presented, staff friendly and efficient and the restaurant light, fresh and airy. The price of food is comparative to the quality you receive, I walked out as a new regular!

“Beer, friendly service and good food!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 14, 2014

The atmosphere of the pub felt very welcoming and local. There was a wide variety of beers on tap, all of which were local (I very much enjoyed a pint of Black Dog). The food was a little expensive, but good, and the portions were sizable. Staff were very helpful! Historical past was an additional plus.

“Grand but”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Thistle Inn is reputed to be the oldest inn with the same name and at the same location in NZ.
The décor is fine, the food is fine, the service is fine but when there are few diners around it can seem lonely.
We were in a room on our own, in a corner. For that reason it lacked the warmth and atmosphere that I seek when dining out.
Recommended for the food but not as a night to remember.

“Nice lunch in a historic setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 19, 2013

The Thistle offers good value, food and service in a part of town that doesn't have a lot of choice. The Thistle doesn't try to be more than what it is - a pub - and that's refreshing. Beer Battered Fish of the day with Chunky Chips, Tempura Prawns and Salad Greens was $18 and good value. The fish and prawn were both fresh and well cooked, the chips crunchy and crisp, cooked in good oil. The salad (a winter coleslaw) was nice if nothing terribly special - but it is a pub. Give it a go.

“Christmas Group Lunch”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2012

An enjoyable group meal for 8. Food great as always. Meals all arrived together.
Close and handy to the government quarter - on the way to railway and bus station.
Oldest hotel in NZ still trading from the original site.

Worth a visit for a drink and to soak up the history - with the photos on the wall and they even have a tour of the establishment.
