This hostel is very central, although it’s difficult in Taupo to be far away from the centre as far as hostels are concerned. Despite its central location, it’s quiet enough, a few streets away from bars and restaurants.
The hostel feels crowded when fully booked, which was the case when we were staying there. The kitchen is small in relation to the hostel’s overall capacity, and wasn’t very clean. However, the dining area with big wooden tables and benches is very nice. There’s also an outside sitting area in the little front garden. There’s also a bar in the sitting/dining area, and a pool table which makes it a social place to hang out in the evening.
My friends and I stayed in a 4-bed dorm, which was small but well ventilated. Beds were bunks, rather noisy, and not too comfy, but I’ve slept in worse beds. Bathrooms were clean and modern.
All in all, it’s an ok place for a night. It’s cheaper than most other hostels, central, and social, but if you’re looking for a more homey atmosphere, with less people or something relaxed and quiet, choose somewhere else. I'm not sure the hostel accepts bus crowds, but the crowd was certainly very young (early twenties).
