“Seem pricey, but excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2009

We've been trying to find a good stopover on our Auckland-Wellington drives, as we have a four-year-old, so can't drive straight through. Although I've previously though the Wairakei was a bit expensive, we'll definitely be there again - we had a bed&breakfast deal, with Eli (the child) included for free, as he's under 5. We just felt instantly relaxed and happy on arrival - a large room with two doubles, close to the spas as I'd requested, french doors opening onto an outdoor area, perfectly good buffet dinner and breakfast, and heaps of kids for Eli to run around with. Had we not fallen asleep at 8pm, we could have easily sat in the spa with a baby monitor while Eli slept, and had my husband not hurt his back, he would have definitely been in what looked like one of the best hotel gyms I've ever seen. Excellent heated swimming pools, spas that are actually open to the sky, lovely grounds - none of us wanted to leave.
There are things you could quibble about ... the bathroom was a little dated, and yes, it's a bit out of town ... but for the price I found it excellent value, and it's definitely our new favourite stopover.

We stayed a night at the resort because of a promotion and we satisfied with the rooms (2 double beds). We tried the swimming and spa pools at both locations; all of them need to be cleaned and/or filtered as there are insects floating in them. Otherwise it's a nice accommodation.

We booked a KING ROOM but the size of the bed seems like a Queen than a King. Room is a bit cramped. Having said that, all the facilities are very good. Staff is freindly and helpful. Can improve on the number of food items in both restaurants. Since it's raining season, resort can "lend out" umbrella to guests.

This hotel was further out of town than we expected, meaning a good 10-15 min drive back into Taupo. Room was nicely refurbished and of reasonable size, if a bit pokey. The hotel has plenty of amenities, with pools, spa, gym, squash court, golf course, etc, so those wanting to bring children or stay for a few nights will be well catered for. Also had a good guest laundry which only cost $4 for a wash and dry (cheapest we saw in NZ) which was well appreciated. Didn't dine in-house.

Quite how this place has got the ratings it's got is beyond me.

Firstly don't let the 'bayview' name mislead you. There is no view of the bay to be had here. The location isn't great, so you'd expect the resort hotel needs to be something special to make up for it wouldn't you.

You'd be wrong.

Check-in was functional (although maybe I'm getting old but I couldn't find reception at first.

My room in the tallest (three storey) part of the resort, was a disappointment to say the least. The whole hotel feels like it's seen better days, and is badly in need of a refurb. My room underlined that, and wasn't so much dirty as just badly worn and torn.

Food was average, service was OK, although my early breakfast was late because 'the chef slept in'.

I've been trying to think of one nice thing about this hotel, but I can't.

I think that says it all really.

A lovely hotel in a quiet spot despite its proximity to the Taupo – Rotorua road. The rooms are spread out over several blocks and look a much better option than many of the tourist haunts that are lumped together in Taupo town.
The hotel often seems to offer specials. The receptionist was kind enough to reduce the rate at which we had booked.
The place is ideally situated for trips to the many tourist sites in the area.
The hotel has a good restaurant, so guests can stay put for the evening.
