“Amateur”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 19, 2009

I remember staying here as a kid and so on our trip home we decided to overnight here. I guess my standards have increased as I found the experience distinctly amateur.

The room had been done up and the decor was fresh but the housekeeping staff seemed to be a bit random in terms of towels and toiletries - a single bar of soap for the place and the bath mat hidden below the sink (this cupboard needed a clean too). The previous guest had pilfered the hairdryer and when I asked for one to be sent over I was asked if I had looked everywhere.

The big problem with the room was the light levels. The curtains did not reach the floor or the top of the window and the carpark outside was lit up like a christmas tree at night. I could easily walk around the whole room with all the lights off. When I complained about the light levels they said the lights were there for health and safety. While this is a valid point, they might want to modify the design so that light is directed downwards and guests can sleep. One of the potential benefits of the location is that it is in the middle of the bush and therefore free of light pollution.

Finally, we found the restaurant adequate, but not exciting. We were also served an expired bottle of mineral water and when we complained were asked if it 'tasted off'. Not really an appropriate response. The bottle was taken away and we weren't charged for it, but I was made to justify the complaint a little too much.

On the whole, while it wasn't Fawlty Towers, it wasn't an international standard of service.

  • Liked — Check-in was pleasant and room freshly decorated.
  • Disliked — Room lacked amenities and service was a bit random.

We booked the $199 bed and breakfast for 4 family deal. The room was a "Superior Double", contained 2 Queen size beds, smallish but adequate room and bathroom, enclosed balcony. Everything was spotless. Beds were comfortable. The resort had lovely grounds, the heated pools were wonderful for our children. The children also enjoyed the playground. Poked my head in the gym and spa pools which looked clean and of a high standard, the gym especially was empty but with excellent equipment. The hotel staff were helpful, friendly and I found the service impeccable - nothing was too much trouble. We ate out at the Fairway Cafe in the evening, had an enjoyable evening meal at what I thought was at a reasonable price. Hubby would have liked more vegetables with his lamb shank. My spaghetti marinara was lovely, as was the burger the kids shared (from the main menu, not the kids). Service was good initially, but they never came back to clear our plates or ask us for drink refills etc, so we did leave a little disappointed with the service. The breakfast buffet in the main restaurant was good with a well cooked good variety of food and excellent service. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay, and if we are in the area again would not look at staying elsewhere. It is a distance from the lake - 5 minute drive and not really walking distance unless you had a full day to spare for the return trip, but the tranquility was excellent for a resort of this size. Also, this was peak January school holiday season and the place was not crowded at all, always plenty of room in the pool and restaurants. Imagine during conference season some of the facilities would be a lot more crowded, but obviously it is not a popular choice for holiday makers despite being one of the best value for money we could find in the Taupo region.

  • Liked — Lovely pool area, great service and facilities
  • Disliked — Distances to get from A to B in resort - car a long walk from room, no air cond in room

I have stayed at this hotel on a couple of occassions and not had too many problems with it. However this time around I was quite dissapointed. The service was appalling, especially in the restaurant "fairways cafe"....so bad in fact that after waiting for 20 minutes to be served once seated we got up and walked across the main road to the service station to get dinner!! On a good note...the grounds are beautiful and the room decor is nice also. If you dont mind poor service...go for it!

We stayed here twice as a stopover on our holiday. The resort is close to busy Taupo but not within walking distance, so a car is essential. We had a room in the executive wing. Everything was tidy; everything worked the way it should. The extensive, well tended and peaceful grounds are the real attraction of this place. We loved the warm pools. We had two meals at the Fairview Cafe: tasty, well priced bistro food. The whole place was very child friendly (and there were large numbers of children of all ages around). We would stay again.

I stayed here with family for four days and was quite impressed with what was on offer.
The Wairakei Resort is set in large park like surroundings with lots of recreational facilities on site such as tennis courts, gym and sauna, squash court, two swimmimg pools and a nine hole golf course to name a few.
They have a variety of accomodation ranging from basic stand alone chalets for about NZ$100 up to NZ$700 a night suites.
We stayed in a double room which is the cheapest accomodation
in the main body of the hotel coming in at about NZ$130 a night at a discounted rate.
The room was very nicely furnished with two comfortable double beds with nice soft linen and all rooms have balconies with good views of the surrounding area.
The hotel has many nice lounge areas off the main lobby for socialising and has two restaurants with one being a cheaper cafe style setup and the other a more expensive formal type arrangement.
The staff at the resort were nicely presented and tried their best to attend to all our requests with some going the extra mile to please which was most welcome.
I had a very relaxing comfortable stay and would return to this hotel if I get the chance.

  • Liked — Large park like grounds with nice facilities
  • Disliked — You need your own transport really to stay here.

We stayed at the Bayview in early August for a night in a King size room. It was great. Room was a little on the small side, but for a hotel that caters for conferences and is a resort I thought it was to be expected and didn't put me off. The private spa pools were wonderful (and one of the main reasons for our booking) - even though the weather wasn't too great it was still lovely sitting in the warm pools being rained upon!

The cafe was great - we had the Saturday night buffet which was well worth the $35 each. We looked at the Pavillion which also seemed lovely but decided that the buffet sounded more us. We were very impressed with the wine list and didn't find the cost that much more like you usually find in resorts.

As I used to look after conference bookings and travel in my previous jobs I still have a bit of a fascination with hotels and conference facilities. While wandering around during the afternoon we found the conference rooms and had a nosy - I found them lovely and would reccomend them. The bathrooms for the facilites (which is shared with the house bar) were HUGE! There was even a large area with plenty of mirrors for the ladies to reapply their makeup during lunch!

Would reccomend this to both conference bookers and people looking for a romantic weekend away!

  • Liked — the spa pool
  • Disliked — the fact that it poored down while we were there!

Nice place for the quiet weekend, probably the only “hotel style” accommodation in Taupo and very good alternative to Taupo’s motels. The rooms in the new wings are modern, comfortable, well equipped, but rather small. The rooms in the old wings have no air conditioner and a bit tired. 2 small pools, but could overcrowded during hot summer days. 2 restaurants – a bit pricey. Just about 15 mins driving time to the Taupo centre. I felt it didn't hit the 4* mark that it claims to be, but quality 3* hotel.
