“Good place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

We really liked this resort and would have stayed longer if we'd had more time. We had a good ground floor room with a patio overlooking the grounds and near the smaller of the geothermally heated pools. The pool was wonderful for just relaxing in. The larger pool was slightly cooler (but still very warm) and better for the more serious swimmer. The grounds within the complex were planted up with colourful flowers, rocks and greenery and were well-cared for, with features that included a small bridge. The accommodation was quite spread out so we were a little way from the restaurant. The Sunday three-course help yourself roast dinner was well-cooked with plenty of choice and good value. The ground staff were friendly and helpful, identifying birds for us. The resort was handy for visiting the Orakei Korako Geothermal Park and Cave. We really enjoyed our 2 night stay here.

Great place to stay wish I had another day or two. It was tired but clean and tidy. Staff all acknowleged you even the gardeners. Pool was a great place to relax in at the end of the day. Buffet breakfast was fine all the usual bacon, sausages, hash browns, mushrooms, eggs, and spagettii or baked bean plus an assortment of cereals and fruit etc. We had package of dinner, breakfast and wine in our rooms all added to a great stay. Dinner was 4 course mean with a choice well cooked and presented. Wine selection was also excellent. Will come again.

We just had a few days at Wairakei for a work conference crossed with a family weekend.
While the property is a bit tired, it's also very nicely done.
The children ADORED the pool which must have been about 38 degrees celcius, just a bit below spa pool temperature. You got in and it felt like someone had removed all your bones…you just laze about for ages. Amazing. We barely did any other activities - not even a visit to the playground because of the popularity of the pool.

We had a King Spa suite connected through a lounge to a twin room for the 5 of us; and this was a decent amount of space at a reasonable price, we felt.

The breakfast buffet was fairly standard hotel-fare, but still it drove the kids into a delirium reminiscent of Homer Simpson at an All-You-Can-Eat.

We organised a babysitter for our dinner. She arrived promptly and looked after the children very well. I actually logged on because I wanted to commend her. Her name was Emma, and I was very impressed; especially as I'd seen her working at the resort during the day as well.

The food was decent as well; in fact, a cut above what I would have expected. The staff were all very friendly and helpful; every single one.

So, all in all, while this might not have been my first choice if I could have booked anywhere, I was favourably impressed and would probably come back.

We booked our stay at this resort as we had seen it advertised on Getaway. Whilst it had all the facilities, the resort was a little "tired" and could do with a spruce up. We noticed they had started painting the day we left!! The location was good for attractions such as Huka Falls, Craters of the Moon etc and if you like golf this would be a good place to stay. However would not recommend eating in the restaurant. Our steaks and chicken were over cooked and the sauces left a lot to be desired. As the cyclone was coming in we had to eat here on other nights. We went to the Grill Night only to find pastas and curries and not much else - nothing like the advertisement. However the next night we went to their Sunday Roast and it was excellent. The head waiter was lovely.

Room Tip: We had a room in one of the back blocks that was on the upper level so no-one walked past your outsi...

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a tour group. The rooms are divided amongst several 2 story block distributes around pleasant gardens with water features and geothermal hot pools. Room 718 on the ground floor was equipped with fridge, mini bar, coffee and tea making facilities, clock / alarm, complimentary toiletries, fluffy towels, a hairdryer, iron and ironing board and had doors onto a "balcony". There was one king size bed with proper individual reading lights. Storage was limited for other than a short stay. There is 30m free wifi per day.
I had to wait a long time at reception to make a query as there only seemed to be one person on duty to take bookings and man the front desk at the same time. This accounts for my service rating.
As it was Sunday, we ate in the restaurant which was doing a good value carvery. We were glad to have book ahead as it was full to capacity. The food was very good and the chef recognised our food allergies well. Restaurant service was excellent.
Overall a comfortable stay.
