What a drama to check in! Sam on reception is a jumped up by the book kind of person who should not be front of house.
Air con didnt work, mould in shower, but didn't want to call reception because of the way were treated.
Glad it was only a stop over on start of our holiday, will not return and will not be singing their praises

Room Tip: If you must stay here, make sure you stay on ground floor if you have kids as the pools are quite di...

Stayed one night (to break up a long drive). 2 adults and 2 children. Room was clean, staff were helpful. Only 2 towels though in the room (we had booked for 4). We did not get breakfast included - instead went over to the BP (just over the road) and got coffee, muesli, yoghurt and muffins. We had a swim in the pool in the morning - kids loved seeing the rabbits hopping around the lawn. Pool was lovely.
When we rang to check availability, the cheapest price they quoted was $175. Double checked this price on wotif.com and found $155 to be the best price. Rang back and they did match this (they checked it first). Glad we checked (and "best price" outside the hotel on the sign was $199).

Stayed end of December 2012 to break a long trip (both ways) at the last minute, and turned out to be a great choice. Friendly welcome, loads of attention toward our 4 yr old, which is a great start and indicates that the hotel staff know their market at that time of year. Perhaps they could help out their Chateau colleagues in this department? Definitely 4 star, tired in some places, but room was clean and suited our needs perfectly. As children we used to stop over here (when it was run by the THC) on our many trips down the island, so I took a trip down memory lane and checked out the "old" pool that used to be fed from its own thermal waterfall, and as such all those years ago was very warm. It is now tepid at best and I assume non thermal? It's surroundings haven't changed much so all is not lost!
The main pool was pretty much full at 9pm, children and adults, and hardly relaxing...but as parents of a young boy we now just dream of lying by a pool, cocktail in hand..........
The Pavilion Restaurant did the job, staff pleasant but service a little erratic, but have to say the eye fillet was cooked to perfection, and reasonably priced. The little one's kids pizza though was terrible. It looked like it was out of a packet and microwaved.
All in all, $170 for the room was a fair price and there are plenty of activities for the kids. Will probably use it again as a journey breaker.

Room Tip: Stay in the accommodation wings that are further away from the pool if you want some peace and quiet...

We chose Wairakei resort as a half way stop off point from our home in Auckland, en route to Hawkes Bay for Christmas (2012). The reason for our choice - excellent childrens playground, swimming pools, on-site restaurant, great price and spacious room that could include a cot.

We booked a twin room, which meant we were all together sleeping in the same space. We knew if we let the kids run riot in the pools and playground, they would sleep well - so there was no need for a seperate bedroom. And thankfully, this was just how things went.

Had we been without kids, I hate to admit this but we probably would have avoided Wairakei and stayed in town - but I'm so glad we got a chance to experience it - it is fantastic for families - especially young families.

The gardens are immaculate, the rooms very clean and spacious and so so quiet. I am a ridiculous clean freak/germaphobe and nothing freaked me out at all - despite the hotel being fairly tired.

We literally arrived at the hotel at 5.00pm, unpacked, had a good half hour playing in the playground, freshened up and headed for our restaurant reservation at 6pm. The food was fine and the kids menu was perfect. My husband left after he had his meal with our 18month old, while my daughter and I waited for dessert.

While we were enjoying dessert, my husband put our son to bed in the supplied cot and sat outside (there is a little patio area with a table and chairs outside every room) while our toddler went to sleep. When my 5 year old and I arrived after dinner, we did the same again - she went to bed and my husband and I enjoyed a bottle of wine outside the room. The immaculate gardens provide a tranquil space for relaxation.

We all slept incredibly well (totally inexperienced at sharing a single space together!) and
the kids had a blast.

I highly reccommend this hotel if you are travelling with a young family.

Room Tip: If you are in a similar situation to us, Room 712 is great. Corner room, ground level, easy access t...

While billed as a resort, it's more like a large hotel with a few extra amenities. There is a golf course on site, but it's only nine Holes And there are a couple tennis courts and two pools. It is near a lot of other attractions such as the huku falls in the Waireiki golf course which is a five star course. See details at tips golf tips. Although it appears to be standard in New Zealand, the 10 AM check out time is inconvenient, especially for a holiday weekend. Furthermore, the hotel restaurant stops serving breakfast at 10 AM as well and the golf course doesn't begin with a lunch service until 11. We found A service manager who was willing to give us pastries and coffee until a full meal could be obtained, but the gap in service times seems odd for a so-called resort. Unless you are a high handicapper, or a beginner, there's no reason to play the resort course when one of the best courses in New Zealand is only two minutes down the road. The rooms are also a bit small and overall, we didn't feel it was worth the money. It's not a bad place, but we probably wouldn't stay there again.

Stayed for Christmas 2012 and there famous Christmas Lunch...

Thank you we had a great time...

The resort has a beautiful location and wonderful grounds. But some parts are getting a little tired and need upgrading..
This is a large resort and designed for large groups so can be quite busy and noisy on some of my visits.

Christmas lunch was all it was made out to be food wise.. The decorations could have done with a bit more effort though.

The setting and the location of this hotel & conference centre is great. I've stayed here plenty of times on the past and loved it but this time it was a big disappointment. $179 for two was not a bad price but it did not turn out to be value for money. room was pokey & carpets in room & hallways very worn & shabby. we were located in a room quite some distance from the facilities in at first appeared to be an older wind. Entry to rooms was via a service area! Room service menu was extremely limited, couldn't get just a toasted sandwich, had to have a full meal. Breakfast was very hum drum & institutional like. We won't be back, there are so many other options in Taupo.

Room Tip: Not sure they have good rooms. But ask for a new wing.
