“Great value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

My friend and myself (both senior ladies) stayed 2 nights in March 2014 and have only positive things to say about the motel - perfect location on the shores of Lake Taupo in quiet area with very easy walk to town & eateries.Received a discount at Thai restaurant on mentioning we were guests here. Our unit was quite spacious - 2 levels with kitchen, lounge & bed, bathroom & toilet downstairs and large bed and bathroom upstairs - all clean & with excellent views of lake from both levels. The new Hosts, Kenny & Karen are lovely friendly and helpful people and indeed went out of their way in assisting my friend when she lost her wallet. They showed much concern and Kenny drove her to search for it, drove her to the Police Station to report same and spent quite a deal of time providing telephone assistance re cancelling of credit cards etc. May not be 5 star but we had a very pleasant stay with great value for money and I would definately not hesitate to stay here again.

Room Tip: There seems to be a variety of layouts/rooms to choose from to suit all needs.

This motel is perfectly located within minutes walking of shops and eateries and also has great views of the lake. There are choices of room layout depending on individual needs. Our room was simply appointed but very spacious. New managers were very helpful. The only groan was that there was nowhere to put anything in the shower. Would recommend for those who are not expecting 5 star but also like nice views and shopping at will.

Room Tip: Front rooms obviously have better view. Ask about room layout to suit your needs.

I give this a high rating for space, location, and layout -- clear lake view, 2 floors per unit, 2 bathrooms, and good lighting. Also because the unit we rented had been totally redone. (Ask first -- not all units have been rehabilitated yet.) Spa tub works well, but needs at least 20 minutes for the water to cover the jets, as hot water pressure is low.

Sloppy housekeeping: our floor was clearly not swept one day, and we received no toiletries except a single wafer-thin bar of soap for the entire unit until our third night, when two bars and shampoo appeared. No telephones, as previous guests abused them. Internet is at extra charge on Zenbu net, and will cost you at least NZ$5-10 per day for one person with moderate usage.

We have stayed at this motel several times. It has lovely views of the lake.It is so close to town, within walking distance. It has a lovely outdoor pool which is lovely on those hot summer days. Also a spa for the cooler times in taupo. Our unit was one that had been recently referbished and was just lovely. A bathroom, kitchen and lounge down stairs, and upstairs a king bed in one beedroom with spa bath, and two single beds in the other room.In between both rooms is a toilet and handbasin, so for those of you that have to get up in the night, this is perfect. The room has a lovely heatpump, so there is no need to go cold.We have also stayed in one of the older units and this to was fine.Lovely and spacious, and from what i can see, every unit would have a view of the lake, which is a must when you stay in taupo.I would highly reccomend this place to stay. The owners are lovely friendly people, and we will certainly stay there again when we are in taupo.

We are a professional couple having stayed in countless motels from average to excellent. This motel is poorly maintained, lacks a phone in the room, had a microwave that did not work but otherwise neat and tidy. One gets the impression that the place is under maintained and asking for payment up front is a first for us - indicating issues with the way the motel is managed. There is much to be improved here so stay with this in mind.

Room Tip: Look before paying.

We found Chalet Suisse by chance...and what a find. It has a view over the lake to the distant, snow-capped mountains, and yet is not on a busy road. It has a swimming pool and hot tub and each appartment has outdoor space. Inside the accommodation is VERY spacious, duplex with a large, well-equipped kitchen and living area, huge bedroom and large, spa bath! Excellent.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are excellent.

Some people expect 5 * at 3* prices, but this is probably as near as you can get! It is a typical motel, with a nice pool, and various variants of rooms. The rooms are fully equipped ( including sky, and wi-fi available, at a small charge). It is central and there are two good restaurants next door on the waterfront.
