“Best equipped apartments”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 15, 2014

Newly refurbished 1 bedroom apartments were well equipped and everything spotless. If there was any other equipment you wanted ie picnic sets, you only had to ask and one was provided. The apartment is on two levels and although air con is installed downstairs it did get warm upstairs but I requested a fan and one was supplied straight awayThe heated pool was crystal clear, on occasions the spa's were too warm. If you do not want a night life holiday Turangi has lots of daytime activities and many of these offer a discount if you are staying at the lodge. All guests are invited to a sausage sizzle on Saturday morning where Lois, the very bubbly and knowledgable, resort manager supplies lots of information about what's on and where is good to go. We have used 5 different time shares in NZ and so far this has been the best. The only downside was the mattress was not very comfortable. We will be back to NZ and this is one place we will return to.

Room Tip: The new refurbished rooms are nearer to the road so some road noise can be heard. When they refurbis...

Great facilities, lovely 1BR unit. Very comfortable, great shower and fantastic kitchen. Lois and the staff are great, nothing is too much trouble. Very good location. Would highly recommend. Thank you for a great holiday.

Heated pool, two spa rooms, surrounded by mountains and farmland, apartments had everything we needed (except non-stick frypans; failed pancakes only downside). Really felt like a home away from home. Hard to be in this location without a car if you want to get around to see more than what is immediately surrounding you but plenty of activities in Turangi: Rock climbing, white water rafting, lots of walks. Hard to get here from Aukland airport: 5 hour bus ride. Worth it in my opinion, though.

Room Tip: two bedroom apartments have a fully functional kitchen with oven, stovetop and all cooking utensils...

My wife and I stayed one week at the Lodge. Although Interval assigned us a limited kitchen room the property manager was kind enough to move us to a full kitchen room. Compared to some North American properties we have stayed in over the years the room we stayed in was much smaller than what we are used to. It is basically a regular hotel room with a bedroom upstairs.
The property manager Lois and her front desk staff were very helpful. Lois, especially, was full of good information and was very accommodating to our needs.
The room came with good sized bathroom complete with a wonderful shower that had plenty of water pressure and hot water.
We tried the spa pool on three occasions. It can accommodate two people comfortably, perhaps a third person. Any more people would be too crowded.
The outdoor pool has children's and adult section. The size of the pool is average and was busy all week with kids. There is an Olympic size pool across the street from the Lodge.
Games Room has table tennis and a pool table. Lounge has a TV set mounted on the wall, a fireplace and an outdoor BBQ.
The most disappointing part of the Lodge is TV channel selection which is very poor and extremely expensive and slow internet. You get complimentary 30 minutes when you check in. I recommend using the Public Library which offers free wi-fi. It is only 10 minute walk from the lodge.
There is a small shopping plaza and New World grocery store less than 10 minute walk from the lodge. Cafes and couple of restaurants in the neighborhood but nothing special and bit pricey.

The Lodge and town of Turangi is halfway between Taupo and Tongariro National Park. About 40 minute drive in either direction.

Overall we had a good stay as we did a lot of hiking, therefore, spent little time in our room. Outdoor activities around Turangi are plentiful with great scenery.

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to noise you might want to avoid rooms 1-9 as they face the main highway. Rooms...

Turangi Leisure Lodge - well below expected standard for Interval International

We stayed here as [part of an Interval International exchange. Good location to explore Tongariro National Park but quality of accommodation is only equivalent to a 3 star motel.

The things we found extremely disappointing include:

• Three bedroom units unable to be configured to accommodate 2 adult couples –this is actually a regular complaint of ours for Interval accommodation – not every travel party consists of parents and children and even when travelling with adult children a double bed option is often welcome;

• Very poor quality of bathrooms – only a flimsy shower curtain, no shower screen, old baths, no tiled floor, poor quality towels;

• Kitchen seemed to have been updated but tiny – only 1 person could work at a time, hardly conducive to preparing a family meal.

• No free Wi-Fi after introductory 30 mins

• No movie channels

• Inconvenient access to communal facilities for family units and no private outdoor sitting areas such as balconies, decks, courtyards

• Shared laundry facilities

• Excessive traffic noise from state highway – units need double glazing

• Irregular staffing of reception and little interest in service – by contrast the visitor information centre is excellent

I am concerned that this accommodation might be the first impression of New Zealand for overseas visitors – Interval please lift your game and find more time share arrangements in North Island – we stayed at Club Paihia on a Getaway – a somewhat superior experience but we have never seen this one on “points” ….

Some general advice if you do plan on staying here includes that you should be self-sufficient; there is limited choice of restaurants nearby and no other entertainment so go to bed early!

Room Tip: not on main road side

We booked here as it was half way to where we wanted to be and a good price, although we have driven past many times it was not somewhere we had considered as a destination. We booked a week but had booked our destination accommodation previously so stayed only a few days. Our apartment was close to the main road and a little noisy but tolerable, there are other units away from the road. My wife enjoyed the heated pool and spa, we attended a meeting where locals discussed what treats they had to offer and had a sausage and drink.
We were both very pleasantly surprised with the whole package, great little town, a few shops, magnificent scenery, fishing in the Tongariro River or the lake.
This is no longer a half way point but a destination.

Room Tip: Try to get a room away from the main road, you can hire all the gear for a fish in the river from th...

Our cabin is unit 28 which has been recently remodeled. The carpet needs to be replaced
for sure. It is well equipped with dishwasher, powerful oven, toaster, DVD player,
two electric burners, a lot of pots and pans for 6 people. Master suite with a full
bath is upstairs and bedroom downstairs has a queen bed and double bed plus sofa bed
in the living room. The washer and dryer are located in the bathroom downstairs.
There are 2 TVs. Another cabin next to ours is currently under renovation. The noise
did not bother us since we were not at the resort during the day.

The shower stall upstairs was clogged and Helen from the front desk took care of it
immediately. On Saturday morning, There was a presentation of activity which included
breakfast e.g. venison sausage, hot dog and sausage patties. There was not enough food
for the number of people who have showed up. We did not get a chance to use the spa and
swimming pool which may be too cold to use. The electric circuit was tripped while my
wife was blowing her hair and both washer and dryer were running.

There is a New World supermarket within walking distance from the resort and live NZ mussels
are available at $3.99 per kg. The mussels are very tasty and sweet.

We picked up a prepaid SIM card from Vodaphone at Auckland airport for $30 with 500MB of data and use
the unlocked smart phone as a hotspot but the speed is extremely slow and coverage is spotty
in Turangi or surrounding areas. We get good coverage in Auckland however.

We have visited the ski area which is beautiful, Hobbiton Movie Set, thermal pools and Kiwi
bird park. We decided to check out 2 days earlier than scheduled to drive back to Auckland.
