“The Ultimate in Fly Fishing For Trout”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2013

My co-host and I brought 8 couples to Poronui in mid-November 2013. It was a golf and fly fishing trip and Poronui was our fishing stop. During our 5-day stay, some of the couples were keen to fish everyday but others wanted to take part in other activities. As a professional fly fishing guide in Colorado and host of other international fly fishing trips, I have to say that Poronui is the epitome of fly fishing for trophy trout in a wild setting. Our group immediately caught on to the thrill of using large dry flies and hunting big browns and rainbows. And then our guests started requesting the helicopters to take them to even more remote, untouched locations. This heli-fishing that we did has to be the ultimate experience you can have while angling for trout. The Kiwi guides are professional, extremely experienced, and a lot of fun to be around each day. Eve and her crew go to extreme lengths to please the guests and make sure all their needs are being met each day. We can't wait to get back and we know that others will be thrilled to discover Poronui.

Room Tip: The cabins have everything you need and they are perched above the river. Also, they are convenientl...

Pleased your group discovered the thrill of the fly outs. The flights themselves are worth the experience. See you in 2014.

I was fortunate enough to guide a group of 16 guests through New Zealand in November of 2013. Being an American and having spent 3+ years in New Zealand working at Luxury Lodges throughout I've witnessed some great properties and hospitality. I had never visited Poronui before staying there for 5 days with my guests. I can honestly tell you that the service, hospitality, friendliness, and property of Poronui are the best in New Zealand. Eve and her crew of few, but busy, worked seamlessly to provide a lifetime experience for all in the group. We will be going back for many years to come after this first trip.

Room Tip: I'm not sure there is a bad room in the house :)

My husband and I , both avid fly-fishers, have visited New Zealand for 3 weeks every Nov. for the past 6 years. Poronui is the only spot that is always on our itinerary. Fishing on the property is varied and first- rate and the flyouts leave right from the front yard and in 10-20 minutes you are fishing some of the best rivers in the world. The lodge is managed by Eve Reilly, an Irish woman who has been at Poronui for 20 years. Everything runs smoothly from the chef's daily elegant meals to the cleaning of the rooms and daily laundry service. After 6 years we feel like we are arriving home when we walk in the door and each year our stay gets a day or 2 longer. We're looking forward to a 10 day visit next Nov. Lucky us ! Pam Meier, Baltimore, Maryland USA

My husband and I celebrated his 30th birthday at Poronui, which turned out to be one of our best holidays. There was so much to do without having to do anything! We had planned to do a day's skiing but opted to simply enjoy the beautiful lodge and scenery. We do recommend trying the clay target shooting as was such a blast, especially with Sean as our guide. It was also such a treat to have all our meals specially prepared and cooked, and both Phil and Eve were fantastic in catering for my husband's dietary requirements. By the end of our 3 night stay, we really felt we were leaving our second family. A very special experience and we look forward to returning to Poronui.

We recently spent a weekend at The Blake House at Poronui with a great group of friends. What an absolute treat! The house is end to end simple luxury & appointed with everything you need for a crowd - simply stunning views for relaxing whatever the weather and whatever your enthusiasm level for activity is. We walked for miles over the extensive property, had wild deer roaming up to our doorstep & gathered fresh mushrooms for dinner. Excellent staff who go to great lengths to cater to whatever your requirements are - we'll be back! Thanks to Eve & Claire & looking forward to February 2014 when we visit next.

it was a dream. Excellent fishingtrips. Very nice people. We enjoyed very mutch the dinners. Everyone had the dinner together on a big table. That is the way i like it. My wife don't like fishing. So the people of Poronui greated an very nice programm for her beside fishing. So both of us had a fantastic time.

We spent 9 days at Poronui lodge in a real hunting and fishing paradise. The staff was very friendly, professional and flexible in looking to fulfill our wishes from arrival until the last day. Soon you will have the feeling to be a special someone for the team. The hunting and fishing guides are well experienced and patient with beginners.
When ever possible we recommend to go for a heli tour for fishing and to spend one or two nights in a hut. We enjoyed the familiar atmosphere during lunch and dinner together with the lodge manager and the guides. Food and wine was phantastic every day and we did not missed a menu card. For nature freaks, there are a lot more activities we did not had the time to test.
Poronui lodge is a great place for hunting, fly fishing and other outdoor activities. We regard this lodge as one of our favavorite holiday places and hope to return soon.
