“Beautiful location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2014 via mobile

Beautiful, beautiful location and immaculately kept grounds make for an idyllic setting. Professional, friendly staff who were all welcoming. The room/lodge was beautiful and very comfortable.
Unusual offering of dining in separate locations around the house and gardens. You meet up in the lounge for aperitifs and canapés, but are then spirited away to different locations to eat. Must be difficult for the staff trying to get hot food to all those different rooms, and we didn't think it added much to the experience. I can see the attraction if you are on honeymoon, but we quite like interacting with other people if we have the opportunity.
Breakfast was not good. We chose the traditional eggs and bacon option and it was served in a luke warm iron frying pan with steep sides, making it very difficult to eat. Also the bacon was very leathery as if it had been kept warm for some time. Definitely could do better there.
We enjoyed our stay and would recommend it, with those factors to be taken into account.

Having stayed at Matakauri, kauri cliffs and cape kidnappers we were slightly disappointed by huka lodge. The rooms are lovely and the service was good but it just wasn't as good as the previous properties and if we went back to taupo we would save our money and stay at the Hilton.

We were slightly annoyed by a staff member who seemed to get in a mood when we asked the person to take our luggage to our car at 7.30am- paying over 1000NZ $ per night we didn't think this was too much to ask.

My tip would be if visiting taupo stay at the hilton and save your money and use it to stay at cape kidnappers or kauri cliffs.

Dear sc207,

Thank you for taking the time to review Huka Lodge, I was disappointed to hear that your experience at Huka Lodge was not all that you expected.

Staying at our lodge involves many dynamic parts and always includes breakfast, pre-dinner drinks and dinner. Dining in the evening at the lodge is considered an integral part of the entire Huka Lodge experience and allows guests to interact with other guests, our staff and experience what we consider to be the finest lodge cuisine available. I understand that on both of the nights you stayed with us you decided not to dine at the lodge which may help to explain why your experience was different from the other properties you have mentioned.

Notwithstanding this I am pleased that you enjoyed your accommodation rooms and the level of service, perhaps if staying with us in the future you may allow us the opportunity to showcase the lodge in its entirety which is an experience that I am confident you will enjoy.

Kind Regards

You have undoubtedly heard of the superb Huka Lodge. We visited the Lodge for 4 days as part of a one month visit to NZ. We had heard so much about it that our expectations were sky high. The Huka Lodge exceeded these by a mile. In short, staying there is effortless. Our cottage was roomy without being too large and offered all the modern amenities unobtrusively. Each evening our dinner was served by Kate, the staffer assigned to us for our stay. By the second night, Kate knew our preferences so well we felt she was one of the family. The grounds are maintained immaculately yet we never saw a gardener or heard a mower. Every question or request was met with good cheer and promptly fulfilled. The staff was never too rushed to give us their full attention. Huka Lodge is a "Must See" on you trip to NZ.

Huka Lodge has been on my bucket list for a very long time and I'm leaving on the list because we will be going back!! It exceeded the fairy-tale I imagined it to be. Having work in hospitality I can say the staff are some of the best in the business and an absolute credit to the hotel. The hotel and grounds are simply stunning and do yourself a favour and dine at the Jetty, it is truly magical. Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so special.

And forgive me quoting an old NZ marketing campaign -DON’T LEAVE TOWN UNTIL YOU HAVE SEEN THE COUNTRY
Huka Lodge is a world class venue with every detail – executed discreetly and professionally – right here in New Zealand.
For a standout thrill of our lifetime – this was the place chosen by my husband to celebrate my birthday – and driving up the verdant groomed driveway was the first of many genuine thrill moments.
Greeted at the front door by professional international staff – you are encouraged to take in hand a glass of bubbly as you wander around the frontage of the Lodge marvelling at your new surrounds and spotting wee trout in the shallows of the river – upstream from the thrilling Huka Falls.
All this, while staff are unpacking your vehicle and setting up your room – in our case we were privileged to be in the Alan Pye Cottage.
Then we were escorted at a leisurely pace through the main Lodge facilities – all very English Fishing / Hunting Lodge with a touch of Africa to celebrate the current ownership.
From here we meander through manicured leafy pathways [maintained I understand by a team of 10, and FYI never seen!] to our ultimate destination. View the Alan Pye Cottage photos online as we move into this glorious home – infinity pool and Jacuzzi – all ours and ponder if this has hosted some of the many famous and celeb guests listed on the website.
Fast forward to pre dinner drinks and the evening meal – where all 9 couples staying on that night were given choices for their dinner setting and we were lucky to get the Green Room – an outdoor hedged nook – private, leafy with chimanees stoked up all night and romantic candles all around.
The meal seemed limited in choice but each offering was visually stunning and taste sensational. Excellent wine selection from their underground cellars – also used to host dinner guests.
The facilities here are beautifully maintained and the staff are totally committed to providing all guests with exceptional service.
Waking up to the Waikato river misty and mysterious in the early morning was also incredible then enjoying a romantic room service breakfast to linger longer in our cottage – surrounded by many incredible touches, luxury bedding, full bar and beverages included with nespresso coffee machine and total privacy.
This property and surely the other two in the portfolio – Dolphin Island in Fiji and Grande Provence in Africa – should be placed on your bucket list – strive to revel in the experience that they offer. I am confident it will never be regretted. We plan to return as we have discovered that travel overseas brings some wonderment and satisfaction BUT here in New Zealand we have gems like Huka Lodge – a mere 3.5 hours drive from home - BLISS

Room Tip: upgrade for a very special occassion to the Alan Pye Cottage - incredible / romantic and private

The Huka Lodge is the ultimate romantic beautiful resort. The staff seems more interested in pleasing the guests than the guests themselves! Every night each guest chooses their own private dining area. Somehow the rooms are cleaned and freshened quickly and beautifully. Every guest feels like they are the only guests there.
The Huka Lodge is definitely WORTH it!!!

Room Tip: all suites appear to be the same with an incredible view of the river leading to Huka Falls

It is difficult to describe the beauty found at Huka Lodge. Our four night experience left us speechless. It was the first stop of our three week vacation in New Zealand and from the moment the asst manager picked us up at the airport we were made to feel pampered and spoiled by their professional and warm staff. I thought I'd died and had gone to heaven as we drove onto the property. The grounds are lush, well manicured and have the feel of a secluded yet charming and country setting on the beautiful Waikato River. We felt like royalty as the manager and other attendants were there to greet us and offer a glass of crisp cold wine while touring the grounds. Our suite was large yet cozy and beautifully appointed while extremely comfortable with every detail taken into account. I even took pictures of the bathroom :) There was a reception each evening before dinner with delicious wines and cocktails along with nibbles. We had private dinners every night inside and outside -- all in different locations with fireplaces and so romantic. We dined in the private library where Queen Elizabeth had dined. A helicopter picked us up on their front lawn and took us sightseeing to witness the live volcano on White Island which was spectacular and our pilot "Di" was fantastic. Enjoyed the gorgeous golf course nearby and also went fly fishing which my husband loved. I could go on and on! Thank you Keri and to every single wait staff person...you are what complete the experience. And a special thank you to Lyall who was our adorable driver several times and very kind and helpful when driving us to the airport. We will definitely be back!! Best wishes Huka Lodge...you have our accolades!
