“Lots of photographic opportunities at the rapids”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2012

Armed with my camera, my partner and I headed to Taupo one dull Sunday afternoon. It turned out to be perfect - we turned off the main road from Rotorua and had a look at the Rapids. The kowhai trees along the dam were in flower and the tui's were making little pigs of themselves as they drunk the nectar. Without the sun casting shadows I was delighted to be able to get some good photos.

The rapids themselves were great. From the dam, the colours in the pool were lovely - greens and blues.

You can walk down a path to a couple of lookouts. It's worth making the effort.

All in all, this was a lovely spot to visit - and it didn't cost a cent!

“Beautiful place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2012

Nice little walks to amazing lookouts.
You can even see the dam opening its doors (check the schedule on Huka falls visitor center or on the sign close to the dam), we saw it a 4pm and it was nice to see the water falling !

“Quite a spectacle”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 11, 2012

We found a sneaky place to watch these rapids away from the crowds and at first we wondered what all the fuss was about because we waited and waited and waited. We'd read the information about the warning siren etc and so were expecting this almighty rush of water. It actually doesn't work like that as its a gradual build up over about 15-20 minutes but it is impressive and worth the wait.
We watched it from a little known spot next to the power station - but don't tell everyone or they'll all go there :-)

“Waterpower”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

We've visited a number of times, yet are still drawn back to this awesome event when in the region. The sheer power of the water and the speed that it fills the rapids is something to behold.

“From little river to a rapid”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 21, 2012 via mobile

There are three times a day when you it is good to go there. At 10am, noon and 2pm as at these times they open the damn and flood the little valley. Go to one of the lookouts to see how the water fills everything up and the little river becomes a rapid. And remember that there is a part in the new Hobbit movies which was shoot there. So if you saw it, you will maybe remember the scene, if you did not yet look out for it.
